After my first hotel fell through during a cross-country drive, I wound up at the Red Roof Inn in Columbia, Missouri, and found it a decent stop for the price. Parking was plentiful when I arrived around 10:30 p.m., check-in went smoothly, the room was reasonably clean, and the water was hot. The staff were kind and helpful, especially the front desk guy who said he works seven days a week running the place and seems to be doing his best. There's no pet fee, which is a rare bonus when traveling with animals. It's quiet, handy to the interstate, and not fancy, but I think it gets an unfairly bad rap from people expecting five-star treatment on a budget. I'd come back.

I had to change rooms three times because they were dirty and not properly cleaned. I told the front desk that if they worked at the hotel where I work, they'd all lose their jobs. Some rooms have mold on the floors. Check behind the BEFS and the AC units, especially in room 105. Microwaves were missing plates or weren't heating, and I couldn't even shower because there was no hot water. How does that happen? There's a fake review here claiming someone stayed for months and the rooms were nice. Maybe it was paid for, or maybe it's just a lie. There's nothing good about this place. Honestly, zero stars.

I paid $95.00 in advance, but when I saw the place, they wouldn't cancel the reservation or refund me. I had to pay another $100.00 to stay somewhere else, which is a separate story. The parking lot had concrete debris and screws everywhere, and the plastic railing definitely isn't OSHA compliant. Maybe they're remodeling, but it would take an act of God to make this somewhere anyone would want to stay. You could smell the inside from the street. With no cars in the lot, you'd think the dump was abandoned. This is one of those cases where you don't get what you pay for. See photos!

Filthy, run-down place, and there were bugs. The TV remote didn't work, and the desk chair had a huge hole in its seat padding. One wall light had a bulb, the other didn't, and neither had a lampshade. The metal lattice ironing board had no cover or padding, and there wasn't an iron. I could list more, but that should be enough to keep you from staying here.

I stayed one night after moving my kid into University of Missouri. It was a late check-in at 11:40 p.m., and I booked because this was the closest hotel. The room was dirty and disgusting: no TV remote, a phone that didn't work, beds that looked barely made, three broken lights, and a lamp in the sink. It felt like a homeless shelter. I thought about going to the front desk, but the office and outside of the building made me think they wouldn't care. Then at 5:15 a.m. someone knocked on my door five times. I yelled that they had the wrong room, but nobody answered. I looked through the peephole and saw no one. It's a corner unit, so it felt like someone wanted me to open the door. I didn't feel safe. How does the city of Columbia let this place operate as a hotel, and why is Red Roof Inn corporate affiliated with it? Also, the ratings don't add up to me. Why are there no half-star or one-star aggregate ratings on Google, TripAdvisor, Orbitz, and the others? Right now Google has it at 2.8/5, Priceline at 4.3/10, TripAdvisor at 2.7/5, and Kayak at 5/10. Read the one- and two-star reviews for an accurate picture.
