Hampton Inn Corpus Christi-Northwest I-37

I drove 6hours from Dallas for a funeral, arrived at 11, and went straight to bed. The room smelled like mold and mildew, and portable air conditioners were scattered in the hallways, so I assumed the building had AC problems. My unit never cooled the room. The bed was extremely lumpy and hard, but I was worn out from working all day and driving 6 hours, so I just slept. I checked out at 8 am and told the front desk lady, Mary, about the bed and AC before heading back to Dallas. When I checked my CC statement, I saw an extra charge of $250 for smoking in the room. That is completely untrue. I called and spoke with Mary, who said the cleaning lady reported that I had put towels on the smoke detectors and was caught smoking. All untrue. I have severe asthma and take 2 inhalers a day just to breathe. I called again today because I still hadn’t heard from DaShaw the manager. They said he was busy and would MAYBE call me back. I feel this was retaliation for complaining about the AC, bed, and mold/mildew smell.

The room was the strongest part of my stay: plenty of space, clean and comfortable, with a modern bathroom and a nice walk-in shower. The bed was big, and there was enough desk and seating space to work or unwind. The fitness room also had a lot for a smaller hotel, including treadmills, free weights, kettlebells, and exercise balls. Staff were friendly and polite. The rest of the property feels older. The elevator had obvious scuffs, and the hallway carpets and elevator finishes looked worn beside the updated room. Dehumidifiers and portable AC units were running in the halls, which gave the impression of moisture or HVAC trouble. There wasn't a smart TV for streaming Netflix or YouTube. Fine for a short stay if you want a comfortable room and useful amenities, but the common areas need better upkeep.

The desk clerk was very kind at check-in, but I expected a clean, safe place to sleep even at a three-star Hampton Inn. The room smelled as soon as I walked in. There were cobwebs and bits of leaves on the dirty floor, and the AC/heater grill was full of dust and dirt. Worst of all, there were bugs. I will never come back.

The pool was clean and a good size for older kids, and the hot tub was really hot with lots of bubbles. Watch your footing when you get in, though. It looks shallower than it is, with just one small step before it drops off. Our room was clean and comfortable, breakfast was great, and all the staff were friendly and seemed to enjoy their jobs. I think this is the only place we'll stay from now on!
