The Downtown Duluth Inn

The breakfast was a nice extra, and it was great value for what we got. I had no problems, including with noise, which is unusual for me in hotels. The staff were very accommodating during my four-day stay. I’ll stay there every year now.

The room and sheets were clean, and check-in and check-out went smoothly. I only spoke with staff then, and they were nice. My room was beside the ice machine and probably the washer and dryer, which made it very hard to sleep. Pipes in the walls were loud when someone showered in another room, and my shower kept swinging from very hot to very cold. The room was probably a little overpriced.

The beds were comfortable, and I didn’t find bed bugs, but the rest left me underwhelmed. We paid $104 for a Saturday night. Maybe that’s normal in Duluth, but elsewhere this feels like a $60 roadside motel. The room looked nowhere near as nice as the website photos, and the carpet badly needs replacing. The first thing I saw was a huge stain. The walls are very thin, so bring earplugs. The breakfast was just continental, with nothing hot or fresh. Everything was stale and hard, and the coffee was very weak.

We booked because the hotel offers a medical discount; the regular rate seemed high. The rooms were clean and in good shape, the lot was nice and secure, and although it was full when we arrived and we parked on the top level, that was fine. Breakfast had a good selection. We heard other guests talking late because the walls aren’t soundproof, but that was nothing compared with the awful noise from behind the bathroom vent. Every five minutes all night it sounded like pots and pans crashing above our heads, so we barely slept. If that noise were fixed, I’d consider staying again. Instead, tonight I’m sleeping in my car, where it’s at least quiet.
