Gardner Hotel & Hostel

The staff were pleasant and the place was clean, but I had the private room and still found this the worst lodging experience I’ve ever had. I’ve enjoyed camping more. The building and its contents all felt worn out, from the blankets and towels to the carpet. Being told I could be charged for stained towels seemed pretty wild when they looked like they’d been used for 15 years. At night, loud music and bass went on from about 8 pm to 2 am, even on weeknights. The website mentions “city noise,” but this felt more like having a club in the bedroom. The bass shook the windows, and the building seemed to have almost no insulation. They mentioned bar music when I checked in, but by then I couldn’t exactly change plans, and I hadn’t expected it to be that bad. The shower water was only lukewarm, nowhere near hot. I’ve had hotter showers at Texas State Parks. If you’re happy partying until 2 a.m., this might suit you. If you want to sleep earlier and take a hot shower, I’d stay somewhere else.

Great value, and there’s no need to look elsewhere. The downtown spot makes it easy to walk to nearby bars, restaurants, and pretty much everything else. The place is charming, and the staff were really kind and helpful. I’d absolutely come back.

There are bars nearby that stay open until 2am, at least on the Saturday I was there, but that didn’t bother me, and some guests may like it. I’ve had good stays here. It’s a little hostel with private rooms too, right downtown and just off the highway. There’s some good history to the place. I’ll be back.

Darryl, the manager, was so kind and even helped with my suitcases. He made me feel welcome, and the rest of the team were friendly, attentive, and professional too. I had a wonderful stay and would happily return. If I could give more than five stars, I’d give 100.
