We really liked staying at The Weller House. Glass Beach is an easy ten-minute walk or a very quick drive away, and shops, restaurants, and the Skunk Train are close too. We stayed three nights in early March, and the grounds were lovely, though they were doing some seasonal cleanup while we were there. Check-in and check-out were easy, and the management folks were helpful and lovely every time we interacted. We didn’t need extra towels or cleaning, but I imagine asking wouldn’t have been a problem. We booked the Sea Glass room at the top of the attached tower. There’s no elevator, so expect stairs. It’s not a big room, but it had what we needed: a very comfortable king bed, a large shower and tub facing the bed in the main room, a separate little bathroom, fold-out table and stools, space heaters, a fan, silverware, microwave, fridge, flashlight, lantern, and even a first aid kit. The bright, cozy room has windows all around and ocean views. We caught a couple of lovely sunsets from the window, and the tower’s very top has a viewing platform with a 360-degree look over the water and town. The only snag was finding the entrance after dark. The front walk was poorly lit and there wasn’t a streetlight on that stretch of the block, so it was unclear where to go. I couldn’t tell whether a bulb needed changing or there just wasn’t a light. It didn’t affect our trip, though, and I wouldn’t mark the place down for it.

I came away with very mixed feelings. The beautiful interiors, antique things, tasty cookies and drinks, and a friendly administrator who was happy to answer questions all impressed me. The outside looks a little run-down, but inside there’s a lot to like. The cleanliness was awful, though. We had the onyx room, and the toilet bowl rim was covered in urine. I’d never seen that before, and it was disgusting. There were ants all over too, on the pillows, bed, sink, and in the shower. We’d brought food, and since there was no fridge, left it on the fireplace. By morning it was covered in ants, with a dozen in the sink, tea mug, food, shower, and towels. When you pay a hefty price for a room, you don’t expect that. A couple of ants might not have bothered me, but this was horrible. The room was also quite cool for me. The fireplace kept shutting off, so we called the manager twice to help get it going. The third time we gave up. The thermostat by the entrance was broken too, and some of our things got a little wet in the rain and couldn’t be dried. At least the blankets were warm. We’d been looking forward to an evening by the fireplace, but couldn’t enjoy one.

We picked the Weller House because of its great reviews, but were really disappointed. The Annex Farmhouse room wasn’t clean: a window leaked, with dirty towels on the floor soaking up the water, and there was visible mildew or grime on the bathroom curtain and shower head. Later, the front desk said the room had been rented to us by mistake and offered $25 off. It feels poorly maintained and overpriced.

Ants were everywhere, including in the rugs and all through our things. They completely covered a bag of medical supplies that had no food in it, got into all our luggage, and I still had ants escaping from the bags in my car two days later. Seriously gross. We spent an hour cleaning our belongings and tried to wipe down everything in the room before leaving. I sent photos and my concerns to customer service, and they offered $25. They didn’t take responsibility for the infestation, which was the main reason I wouldn’t recommend the place, along with the lack of customer service. Someone was at the front desk when we arrived, but we didn’t see anyone else during our two-night stay. We booked for three people and got only two large shower towels for both nights. There’s a spot downstairs for extra towels, but we checked twice and found only hand towels. The twin bed in the purple room is completely shot, with pilled sheets and a mattress that visibly sinks. The queen bed was fine and comfortable enough.

We loved being at the hotel even more than our beach outings and dinners, and we can’t wait to go back. My daughter and I stayed in Seaglass, the highest room in the towers, and it was an incredible experience. The room’s windows all around let in the ocean breeze, with lovely views and the Skunk Train directly below. We stargazed from the upper balcony at night and explored the grounds by day. There are interesting little hidden gems throughout, and the flowers made the grounds beautiful for photos. The complimentary morning coffee and cookies were a treat too.
