Hyatt Place Grand Rapids Downtown

The staff were the best part of our stay. Every person we met was friendly, easy to chat with, and seemed genuinely glad to be there. The location was handy, with plenty nearby and an easy walk to Van Andel Arena for our show. Parking at the hotel costs $38 a night. We arrived at 4 PM and were told a housekeeping problem had held up room cleaning. The hotel offered complimentary drinks and food from the bar while we waited, which was thoughtful. We were told it shouldn't take long, but after an hour we put our bags back in the car and walked to a nearby restaurant for dinner. The room was ready when we came back. The room was nice, though not extraordinary, and could have been cleaner. Given how many other guests were waiting after the housekeeping delay, I understood. The shower pressure and showerhead needed attention, and the lighting by the main mirror was so dim that getting ready was a little difficult for two women.

The food was good at dinner with friends tonight. One of the men serving us was great. I also saw an awkward, messy interaction between coworkers and a group. He was handling the tasks well and trying to look after everyone, but the other employees brought their drama to work, which was uncomfortable to watch.

The only thing that felt petty was the $11 charge per person for a mediocre breakfast. Most hotels around town don't do that. With the room rate and parking costs already in the picture, I'd keep the $11. Just my two cents. Otherwise, it's a nice downtown hotel with clean rooms and quiet hallways, pretty much what you'd hope for.

Mo at the bar was a delight, and Yani and Lili were still around after our Griffins game, so we had a great chat with them too. They made the stay fun with their friendly, personable service. We arrived before our room was ready, but Lili and Yani at check-in upgraded us to a corner room on a high floor. The room was great, and the hotel is well placed for the arena and restaurants.
