Modern B & B

The place felt dirty and creepy, and the rooms weren’t as nice as the pictures. There was grime built up in the shower and dead bugs along the window seals. I also found it way too expensive for what it is. I booked through booking.com expecting the whole space to ourselves, since the listing never said someone else would be staying in another room. They only told us at check-in that it was a communal setup with random people. That was really misleading. This is a hostel.

I was lucky to have such lovely guests, and the bedroom and bathroom were both outstanding. The owner, who I’ll call “L” for privacy purposes, was a sweetheart and even offered me change for the metro rail within ten minutes of my arrival. I appreciated that she made a point of meeting face-to-face. Her cleaner, M, was very friendly, too. R, the chef, made me a fantastic omelette and kept up a great conversation while cooking. Parking space and a smart TV were nice to have. I highly recommend this bed and breakfast, and I’ll be back!

The outside could use a good spruce up, and I was a bit dubious at first. But the room was comfortable, the WiFi reliable, and the location meant I could walk to the Menil collection easily. The owners are willing to go the extra step, and the other guests were interesting, too.

It was quiet and peaceful at Modern B&B, and I have no complaints about our two days there. Lisa was a wonderful host, full of knowledge about the area and lovely to talk to. Breakfast each morning was a perfect start to the day. My partner and I will definitely book again next time we’re back in Houston. 😃
