I’ve known The Houstonian through several changes in ownership, and the culture has shifted over time. It used to focus on quality of life and fitness, with healthy food in the dining areas. Later it became more about performance. The feel also went from minimal and focused to materialistic, and maybe even snobby. I used to spend a lot of time by the pool, in the fitness center, on the courts, and in the dining area. At some point, management put key-fob locks on every entrance. You need one check to enter the fitness center, another for the fitness room, then another to access each room or facility inside. It reminded me eerily of working in the penal system. At least there I might have had an armed escort, lol. Despite the high membership fees, there’s no escort at The Houstonian. Getting from the fitness facility to the pool also means pulling out the FOB. I don’t like leaving it on a table, and it can’t go underwater. FOBs get taken, and then the member has to pay for another. I’ve belonged to plenty of country clubs and visited some of the most exclusive ones, but I’ve never felt like I was in a white-collar prison or had to carry a FOB to get in everywhere, every time. These days I only come back as a guest.

I loved the gym most. It’s the closest thing I’ve seen to a lifetime fitness, with a turf Hyrox/Crossfit area, a walkable track, spa offerings, different fitness classes, and plenty of the latest free weights and machines. The marked track was finished with professional track service and was easy to walk. The bed was heavenly, too, with four down pillows, house slippers, and nightly turn-down service. I was here recently for a work conference and should’ve taken more pictures. From arriving to using the facilities, every staff member I interacted with helped create a five-star experience. Everyone working there seemed to have a smile, and even the little interactions felt service-focused. I’ve been lucky enough to stay at several five-star hotels around the country and the world. The closest comparison I can make is the St. Regis in Rome. I recommend it enthusiastically. A five-star experience all the way through.

I’ve been staying at the Houstonian every year for more than a decade, and the facilities and service have always been top-notch. This year, they somehow managed to make the experience even better. The reservations team went out of their way to help get a refund from the separate agency I’d accidentally booked through, so my group could receive the room block discount. From arrival to checkout, everyone made sure we were looked after. I’m a little late writing this, but I didn’t want to miss the chance to praise them. Ten stars if I could. Highly recommend.

The hotel grounds were lovely and quiet, with timeless decor that was clearly well cared for. It felt like an oasis in the middle of a big city. Our room was spacious and set up thoughtfully for comfort, with a very comfortable bed, light controls on both sides, and plenty of outlets. We were there for NCA Cheer weekend, and the service made the stay even better. Everyone was friendly and quick to help without hovering. Housekeeping noticed our daughter had DayQuil out while fighting a cold and left a eucalyptus shower puck on the counter. They also saw our sunglasses and left lens cloths. Those little gestures meant a lot. Thanks for making the visit so relaxing and comfortable.

The room stayed remarkably clean and well kept, and we had a great time at the hotel bar. The bar team worked smoothly together and made for a fun atmosphere. Service impressed us from the minute we arrived. Dalton was an outstanding concierge, Joshua at the front desk was helpful and pleasant, and Gordon was a kind, polished, professional driver. The whole team made our stay memorable. We’d happily recommend the hotel and look forward to returning.
