The pancake machine was the most fun part of breakfast. Press a button and two good-sized pancakes land on your plate about a minute later. I'd never seen one before. There was lots of good food too, from biscuits and gravy, eggs and turkey or pork sausage to cereal, English muffins, bagels and other breads. The room was clean, and the bed gave me the best night's sleep I'd had in ages. Staff were helpful and nice, and the complimentary breakfast was amazing.

The breakfast produce seemed old, maybe the grocery store had given it away because it couldn't sell it. At the usual $100 a night, this place is worth about half that. It's clean, but Expedia customers apparently don't get rooms with working HVAC: the heat was out in 206 and the AC in 306. Smoke detectors were also missing from many rooms. I presume that's so people can smoke in non-smoking rooms.

The mattress was so hard I woke up sore and couldn't get decent rest, like there was no padding at all. I also paid through Orbitz and was charged again at checkout. At first, things seemed fine. Check-in staff were nice, the room was spacious enough for me, my daughter and granddaughter, and the listed amenities were there. But the room wasn't cleaned on the second day. I had to ask the maid for a full set of towels after she'd already passed our room, and she was on a personal call in another guest room. They'd apparently taken the towels without leaving replacements or cleaning.

The staff were polite, friendly, and helpful, but the facility was a different story. Our non-smoking room was saturated with what I can only call toxic levels of room deodorizer. There was no way to open a window or use the AC for fresh air, and I couldn't find any bathroom exhaust fan. The 32-inch Toshiba LCD TV was shot: the picture was badly faded, and the remote only worked from within three feet, right in front of it. The pool was locked and looked like it hadn't been skimmed or cleaned all season. I've stayed in Microtels that smelled fresher, had bathroom fans, and let you crack a window. With all Holiday Inn Express advertises, surely I could've done better next door at the Econolodge. What building code allows no bathroom fan?

The breakfast and office area is conveniently placed, and the staff were friendly and accommodating. The building felt more beat up than other Holiday Inn Expresses we've stayed in, though, and internet was weak in some corner rooms. Both times we visited, the outdoor pool wasn't filled, so call ahead to check whether it's available.
