The location is still perfect, IMO, and the labor staff are phenomenal. But after more than ten years of this being a family favorite, I’m sad to say we’ll need to find somewhere else to love. The things that made it feel like home have disappeared: the local staff who gave great recommendations, the kitchen with actual coffee instead of generic K cups, and the cute coolers and happy hour fridge for drinks by the pool. The pool waterfall wasn’t working and the jets barely worked either. With renovations going on constantly, nothing was offered to make up for it, not even the bicycle fees. This was our first stay since Dwell took over, and it felt like a management company had bought out a private landlord and sterilized the place. Much of the antique, eclectic decor has been swapped for shabby Wayfair products. For about half our stay, we felt like we were living through a renovation. The deck planks had caved in near the lounge chairs, so the whole area was closed for most of our visit. There was also a huge ceiling leak right outside our Mallory room. It took three days to fix. I get that it was urgent, but management didn’t acknowledge it until about two hours into loud plumbing work outside our door at 9:00 am on day three. The owners were absent except when they were guiding repair contractors. They made no effort to get to know the guests until we were on our way home. I wish reviews had a category for ownership and atmosphere. Other guests have asked the same thing I have: “where’s David?” It felt like a house being renovated, not a home.

The online listing said there would be breakfast and a social happy hour to meet other guests, with beer and wine provided. Neither happened during our stay. There was a Keurig with pods, but the only food was a jar of pickles someone had left in the fridge and a couple of oranges on the counter. No yogurt, bagels, or anything else others have mentioned, so don’t count on it. We stayed in the second-floor Gato room. It was nicely furnished with a queen bed, refrigerator, coffee maker, and pleasant decor. The mattress was average, the sloped bottom of the tub made it hard to stand, and the bathroom lighting was terrible. The large guest kitchen has filtered water. The shaded pool and back patio are nicely set up and a good place to relax. The check-in setup is an interesting concept for a Key West vacation: there’s a lockbox outside the room, and someone texts you a code for the key when you arrive. One concern, though, is security. The Inn’s front and back doors don’t lock. Your room door does, but it’s a simple residential handle that seems easy to bypass. There’s also a deadbolt, but our key wouldn’t lock it when we left. Key West seems relatively safe, but there isn’t much protection if someone decides to get in and cause trouble. I wouldn’t recommend staying here alone.

David was exactly as people had described before I arrived: welcoming, helpful with questions, and always keeping the place beautiful and clean. We really enjoyed our stay, and thank you, David. This is my favorite place I’ve stayed in KW so far, after six previous visits. We were on the third floor in a two-bedroom room. It was very clean, comfortable, and had a great overall atmosphere. The bedding was comfortable too. The cold breakfast was wonderful, with hard-boiled eggs, yogurt, fruit, muffins, cereal, and toast. Snacks were available around the clock. Parking wasn’t as hard as I expected. Just watch out for the “Resident Only” ground spots on every other street space. We parked right in front of the Inn and left the car there. I would’ve booked another stay as we were leaving, but next year’s calendar doesn’t open until December. We plan to return.

David runs a really great house. He’s hospitable and friendly, and the place is clean and comfortable. There’s a little soaking pool in the back for cooling off, plus complimentary beer and wine at happy hour. The location is right in the part of Key West you want to be in, with the action just a few blocks away and good restaurants and shops even closer. It’s a gorgeous neighborhood. Somehow, it was also the most cost-effective place to stay on the island that day. Lucky me, I guess. This place was great.

When I’m back in Key West, I’ll definitely stay at The Inn on Fleming again. I highly recommend it. Fleming is a one-way street and much quieter than many others, yet the points of interest are easy to walk to. Bicycles make getting around even easier. I had the Mallory suite on the first floor, close to the kitchen. It’s a converted old home, and the suite was comfortable and plenty spacious for a couple. The bathroom worked well, with good water pressure and plenty of hot water. There’s a second suite door that opens right onto the backyard, where there’s a sitting area beside the pool. The backyard and pool are a perfect spot to relax. The manager, David, was very nice and helpful. We arrived earlier than planned, but he was still able to get us into a room. He also gave advice on local attractions and rented us bicycles directly from the hotel, which was convenient. The hotel has great amenities and staff.
