Home2 Suites by Hilton La Crosse

The rooms were good and breakfast decent, but I won’t stay here again because of how the extra night was handled. Before arriving, I added a night to my reservation and got a confirmation, but no nightly rate was given in advance or included in the message. When I arrived, the charge was almost 100% higher than the room rate for the following evening. The desk staff couldn’t help right away and gave me the general manager’s contact information. I’ve reached out several times and still haven’t received a response after nearly three weeks.

Home2 Suites are usually my first choice when I travel because they’re reliably clean and affordable. The La Crosse location was downtown and still reasonably priced. The main areas were clean and welcoming, and I had good interactions with the front desk at check-in and checkout. My room had just been cleaned, but the perfume-like fragrance was overwhelming and caused physical irritation. It may have come from highly scented cleaning products or air fresheners used to cover another odor. The window didn’t open, so I couldn’t air out the room. Thankfully, the sheets had no smell and the bed was very comfortable. I would have given four stars if housekeeping hadn’t walked into my room without warning the next morning, before I’d checked out. It made me uncomfortable and left me feeling rushed out.

The location is perfect for walking around downtown, and the room was very nice with great service. A few things to know: all the outlets need wall adapters, there was quite a bit of street noise, and the parking lot is very small. They do offer free overflow parking at the city ramp across the street.

I paid quite a bit more for a separate bedroom so my wife and I could have privacy, but the bedroom door wouldn’t lock, and neither would the bathroom, which has two entrances. When I brought it up at the desk, I was basically brushed off and told the doors didn’t need locks. I’ve never stayed in a hotel where the bathroom couldn’t be locked. Anyone could walk in while you’re showering or using it. Why offer separate bedrooms if they aren’t private? I won’t stay here or with Hilton again if this is the policy. Avoid these hotels.
