I was so frightened I didn't want to open my suitcase or take anything out, in case bed bugs got into my clothes. I wouldn't use the shower and left first thing in the morning. At home I sterilized all my clothes and put my suitcase and things in an area where any bed bugs couldn't affect the house. They didn't offer compensation or anything. Before that night, I thought the place was pretty cool, though it needed some cosmetic work and a handyman. I've traveled a lot and stayed in hotels around the world, and had never encountered bed bugs before. Around 2:30 or 3 in the morning, I reached for my drink and one crawled up my arm and ran into the bed. It wasn't a cockroach, I know what cockroaches look like. I screamed, jumped out, and pulled the covers back. I got a couple of photos, not great because the room was dark and the bug was fast. It ran under the bed, and there was no way I could sleep there. I went down to the lobby in my pajamas. The front desk girl apologized profusely and arranged another room. She wanted to see the room, and while we looked under the bed, her flashlight caught something in the corner. I asked what it was, and she said it was a cockroach. I was mortified. Cockroaches and bed bugs! It was 3 am, and the replacement room was directly above the other one. I was freaked out, but somehow managed to fall asleep.

We chose Hotel Mai Downtown Long Beach because it was convenient for our cruise departure, staying there the night before we left. The bathroom in our room was completely filthy when we arrived after 8:30 p.m. It clearly hadn't been cleaned properly. We had plans to meet friends and didn't feel we could wait for housekeeping, so we bought cleaning supplies at a nearby market and scrubbed the bathroom ourselves before using it. We told management the next morning. They acknowledged the complaint but offered no credit or meaningful fix. Cleanliness is a basic expectation at any hotel. I hope management improves its housekeeping. The location is convenient for cruise departures, but the experience was disappointing.

Such a cute place, with lots of amenities. The bidet was an amazing surprise, and the rooms were clean and roomy. Front desk staff were kind and helpful. There's a rooftop sun area, balconies, a pool, steam room and sauna, plus cold water. Parking wasn't overpriced either. We'd definitely stay again.

The rooms are plain but really nice and efficient, and most have little balconies with chairs facing the street. There's a small garage attached and an open lot next door, with parking at $20 a night. The hotel is new construction, though the crooked walls make it look like it was built in a hurry. You can walk to shopping and restaurants, which is great. The less great part is the street crowd, with plenty of street urchins around. The hotel sits on a busy transit hub corner, so all night we heard buses, air brakes, trolley bells, and announcements over speakers. The windows are thick, but they don't block enough noise.

The $20 parking has very limited room on the first floor of the garage. If you have two vehicles, you can use the lift to save space. My 1500 fit in the garage. I'd suggest backing in under the lift. The second floor has a pool, sauna, steam room, and a light weight workout room. There's ice and vending on the third floor, and a rooftop sitting area on the fifth where you can unwind. The rooms all seem to have their own balcony, and the carpets feel very soft, like they were laid recently. The electric bidet has heated seats, which is nice, and lets you choose warm or unheated water. The pillows were far too fluffy for me, but that's okay, can't be too picky. Road noise comes through, especially the buses and their automated voice alerts, though I managed to fall back asleep.
