Short Stories Hotel

The staff were incredibly friendly, and it was handy having complimentary coffee in the courtyard each morning. My room’s desk worked well when I needed to get some work done. I was there for a short business trip and found the hotel really cute. The bar and restaurant were being renovated during the two weekdays I stayed, so I couldn’t try them, but the Original Farmers Market is a very short walk away with plenty of quick food and snack choices. The pool is small; it might have been fun in better weather, but it rained during my visit. I’d definitely come back.

The staff really made the stay. From the front desk to the restaurant, everyone was lovely. The woman who checked me in made a great first impression, though I’m sorry I can’t remember her name. The night auditor was always warm and welcoming, too. I also saw the general manager around the property, keeping an eye on things, which came across as strong leadership. I loved the restaurant, especially the salmon, and compliments to the chef. Andrew made a lovely Mezcal margarita, and I’d order it again. Nikole was prompt, attentive, and lovely when she served me one evening. I’m sorry I missed the name of my daytime server. My room was cute and cozy. Room 202 lets you hear quite a bit, but I didn’t mind since I can sleep pretty much anywhere. There’s some ordinary wear around the property, as you’d expect in a boutique hotel. The outdoor dining area is gorgeous and worth recommending. Live music some nights would be a lovely extra. I had a great weekend stay. Your employees are fabulous, thank you!

The room above us was noisy enough that we could hear footsteps and toilet flushing. The shower head is fixed to the wall, so while waiting about 30 seconds for the water to warm up, you get soaked in cold water. There’s no breakfast, though they do offer free coffee and tea each morning. Staff were helpful and friendly. The location is convenient, close to Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods, The Grove, and plenty of restaurants. You can also scan a code to request things like a toothbrush or a drinking water refill.

We managed to do quite a bit on foot: the Farmers Market, La Brea tarpit museum, Lucky Scent, an un-touristy Thai spot next door, and a Whole Foods run. I know LA fairly well and wanted somewhere that meant less driving while my daughter and I toured colleges. The hotel is small, but we had what we needed within LA walking distance. Valet was excellent when we did need the car. We liked having coffee early and cooling off in the postage-sized pool after a hot day. We stayed a few summer nights and would come back.
