There was no hot water in our room. A lukewarm shower in Utah in February was miserable, and when I called the front desk late at night, they said there were water problems and they could try to find us a room with hot water. It was almost midnight, so my husband and I didn't want to haul our luggage through the obstacle course in the hall to a room that might not have hot water either. I was freezing afterward and asked the desk for another blanket, but got a thin comforter meant to go over the thicker, warm one. The halls were full of buckets, tools, and piles of wood and supplies, and the carpets were filthy. They needed vacuuming and a proper scrub. I know they were remodeling, but if they stay open for guests during the work, the stay still needs to be decent. Our door and closet door were both installed crooked and took a hard push to open or close. They need better workers for these renovations. This was one of my worst hotel stays ever, even though I'm a Wyndham platinum member and often stay at Wyndham hotels. I want a refund.
The breakfast was poor: the bananas were brown, the waffle mix was watery, and the milk was so spoiled it had chunks in it. Even before that, breakfast was weak, mostly carbs like muffins, donuts, waffles, and toast. I didn't expect much for the price, but I was still disappointed. They were renovating parts of the hotel, so some mess was understandable. We were told our room was a newly renovated "deluxe" room, but if that's true, I hate to imagine what it was like before. The carpet and sofa were visibly stained, there were no USB ports anywhere in the room, and the two ceiling fans were different designs with uncovered lights. There was mold in the shower, the tub was frightening, and the water never got warmer than tepid. I've had good stays at LA Quinta before, but this wasn't one. Spend more and stay somewhere else, however cheap this place is.
After the smoke detectors were taken down, the noise, and the unhoused people around the property, we decided it wasn't safe to leave our car there and went elsewhere. As we left, an unhoused person was climbing the wall of the neighboring property and yelling at us. I think our car would have been broken into if we'd stayed. We moved to the La Quinta at the airport, where our car was broken into anyway, so I guess SLC isn't as safe as I imagined and has the same problems as other urban areas. The hotel was a construction zone, with conex containers all around and almost nowhere to park. We waited more than 20 minutes to check in because the front desk attendant was doing a "security walk through." They were renovating the whole place at once and putting guests in rooms among the work, instead of doing it section by section. Our room had ajar doors next to it and several smoke detectors were chirping. The desk said they'd change the batteries. Later I found the attendant and a maintenance worker with a stack of detectors, and they decided to remove them all. There were unhoused people around the property, apparently getting into rooms under construction, or maybe the owner had an arrangement with the city to house people in the building. Down the hall, unhoused people were gathering in a courtyard and doing who knows what. Our brand new room had outlets without power and still smelled of construction materials. The Wyndam app should have warned us that the property was under construction so we could decide whether to stay.
Even with renovations going on, the place was well kept and my room was clean and comfortable. Housekeeping was thorough and respectful, and everyone on the team made the stay enjoyable. The front desk staff were especially welcoming and friendly. I had a wonderful time at La Quinta Inn in Midvale and would recommend it! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🤗🤗🤗🤗❤️
We won't be coming back. The front desk did nothing to make things right when we mentioned the problems at checkout, and the renovation work throughout the hotel looked rushed and sloppy. The newly renovated room had a dirty floor that turned my feet black when I walked from the bathroom to the bed. The shower door wouldn't close, so water got on the floor. The door trim was missing, the furnace was loud and sounded like it might catch fire, and the bed was rock hard. There was paint on the floor, black marks on the light switch cover, shower wall, and sink, a hole in the shower ceiling, chipped paint all over the front door, and cracking mud and tape on the ceiling. The bathroom door needed to be slammed shut and wouldn't latch, and its lock didn't work. This was a big mistake after I forgot we'd stayed here before. At check-in, I told the desk worker we'd seen drug deals right outside our window on the previous visit. She said security had been increased and they were cleaning things up, which reassured me. The next night, though, there was a drug raid in the room below us. When we got back, police cars blocked the parking area, and we had to walk past officers and men in handcuffs to reach our room. The door to that room was then cordoned off. I'll post pictures of the room and the blocked door. It's an obvious drug spot with serious problems, and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.
