Seaside Inn Morro Bay

We had a great ocean view from our room, and the owner was a really nice man who gave us excellent service. The room was roomy and comfortable for the price, and the beach is just a short walk away. The neighborhood seemed safe at night. Such a cute hotel, and I'd happily stay again.

The owner refused a refund after we stayed just one night of the four we'd booked. When my partner raised the bites again, the owner started shouting, called us liars, said we had brought the bugs, threatened to call the police, and told us to leave. We filed a complaint with the San Louis Obispo health department and hope they'll investigate. His hostile response was really upsetting, especially when my partner was already hurting. We were glad to leave, but wanted our money back and some sympathy for what had happened. After the first night, my partner woke with 18 bites on his arms, legs, hands, and neck. He's very allergic to bed bugs and the bites became so inflamed that we went to urgent care for prescription ointment. He'd had bed bugs six years ago, so he knows he's allergic. I couldn't fall asleep that night and stayed up doing other things, so I didn't get bitten. We didn't want to risk more bites or bring bugs home. The last time he had them, it cost $4,000 to have his home superheated. After leaving, we bagged our clothes, ran them through the dryer a few times, and sanitized what we could. The room was dirty too. There was hair on the toilet seat and all over the bathroom floor, which I cleaned myself. The sheets under the comforter had several kinds of hair, including what looked like dog hair. We asked for clean sheets that night and the owner gave us some. The next day, after we showed him the bites, he insisted there were no bed bugs and moved us to another room. That one hadn't been cleaned either, with dog food scattered on the floor. We expected a cleaner room after complaining, but it wasn't. As the day went on, my partner's bites got bigger and more inflamed, and he didn't want to stay any longer. I regret booking this place. I hadn't read enough reviews and didn't know about the reported bed bug infestation. This was the worst motel I've ever stayed in. Please don't stay here. Bed bugs are serious and can follow you home.

We booked because the price was low and it allowed pets, and the website photos and reviews seemed acceptable. Then we were hit with a $25 fee per animal, and the owner or manager was rude. The mattress was awful, there were no smoke or fire alarms or working phones, and the upstairs floors creaked with every step. We were kept awake all night, and it seemed like nobody cared about the noise. We also saw a number of bugs, including a couple of roaches and a few spiders. I don't think they were bed bugs. When we mentioned them at checkout, staff said there was nothing they could do and that “He” wouldn't discount or refund us. One person said, “I quit yesterday, this place is a joke!” Just horrible.

We could hear everything from our room, especially on the first floor: water being turned on, people walking, and doors shutting. The first morning, the owner asked which room we were in and reminded us checkout was at 11, even though we'd booked two nights. Later, around 8 pm, he came to the door and asked if we were another guest. The room was dark and musty, with only two very dim lights, maybe 25 watts each. It was so small there wasn't a nightstand on both sides of the bed, and the bedding looked like it was from the '80s. The floor might have been softer, but it was dirty and we didn't want to risk it. The AC never cooled properly the first night, cycling between high and low, and on the second night it only worked in Fan Only mode. The fridge gasket was coming off, and the freezer was frozen shut. Under the bathroom vanity was dirty, the faucet had buildup and drained slowly, and there was mildew in the window corner. Our view looked out onto what seemed to be a scrap yard. All in all, this was a nightmare stay and not worth what we paid. I can't recommend this place.
