I paid $141 for a night and got a little view, a clean room and bed, nice staff, and an amazing spot in the middle of Manhattan, near bars and a subway stop. The art is everywhere and eccentric, unlike anywhere else. If you need a base for exploring NYC and don't mind rough edges, I can't recommend the Carlton Arms hotel enough. With expectations kept in check, it really is “the hotel you'll never forget!”. It isn't perfect. Built in 1860, the age shows: the floor is uneven, the room is pretty bare, and it was a bit uncomfortably hot even in mid November. There's no elevator, and it's very loud, though I was in a corner room. In the cheapest rooms, you share a bathroom with 15 neighbors, though the room does have its own sink for hygiene.
The artwork all through the hotel is worth taking a moment to look at. My room was roomy and clean, and the hallways, bathrooms, and rest of the place stayed tidy too. I didn't see a single bug during my four-day stay. The staff were warm and gracious, and the reception area felt inviting. I'd happily stay again.
The art throughout the building was breathtaking, and the whole place had such lively energy. My two partners and I came to New York for just one day after winning a contest, and we stayed in room C14. The location was perfect and the price was the best we found in New York City. The room and bathrooms were clean, the bed was really comfortable, and the pillows had just the right firmness. There was enough room for all three of us to fit on the beds. I couldn't try the restaurant because we had to rush home, but there's a pub connected to Carlton Arms that sounds wonderful. I'm a cancer survivor who was part of the Make-A-Wish group, and I've stayed at some of the finest hotels Florida had to offer, including a Hilton. Still, this is where I want to come back. It's become my favorite hotel in the world, and next time I hope I can stay longer. 🥰
Don't expect everything to be perfect here. The fun is in the experience: it's funky, feels like real New York, and every wall is painted differently. Some rooms don't have a bathroom, but it works out fine. And say hi to Ned, the famous hotel cat!
All those colors are still wonderful in my memory. About twenty years ago, I stayed at The Carlton Arms Hotel with my girlfriend and son, and the place has stayed etched in my mind ever since. Its atmosphere is what the Big Apple means to me. Afterwards, I remember 'climbing' the Twin Towers, though we actually took the elevator in the 2-Towers.
