SpringHill Suites by Marriott New York Midtown Manhattan/Park Avenue

Housekeeping never came during our stay. On the second day, after asking for more towels, I was told there were no extra washcloths, hand towels, or bath mats. When I asked for a manager, I was told they wouldn't be available until the next day. Marriott's customer service line said no one could discuss the issue. I called again the following day and did reach someone helpful, but they could only report the problem to the hotel. The rooms were very small and uncomfortable even by NYC standards, and the bathroom was tiny. There was a lot of noise overnight. Flies came out of the lobby bathroom dryer while I was drying my hands. When we arrived, we left our bags and were told we could go into the back room ourselves. When we returned, we got our own bags again. Nobody asked for our claim ticket or ID to check that they belonged to us or that we were hotel guests. I won't return to this location. I've always trusted the Marriott brand, but I'm not sure I will going forward.

We stayed here after a concert at Irving Plaza, just a ten-minute walk away. The room was good, breakfast was great, and the staff were friendly. The shower had plenty of hot water, but its door leaked and left a puddle on the floor. Our room faced the street, so garbage collection at 1 a.m. was loud. Fortunately, we weren't asleep.

The breakfast space was the best part for us, with plenty of options and different main dishes each day. The hotel elevator, though, makes a seriously sketchy noise. It brought back my Tower of Terror PTSD. We heard other guests say it was loud in their rooms day and night, but luckily that wasn't an issue in ours, #1008. Our room was exceptionally cold during the -15C weather. The windows weren't insulated well, so we kept the shutter closed to hold the warmth in. That left very little light, with just one light above the door and two bedside lamps. The room itself was tiny, and with two adults and one kid it was hard to move around the beds or fit our carry-on. In NYC we're not in the room much, but it was still cramped. The shower door didn't seal, so water leaked onto the floor and left an unpleasant mess for the next person.

This place was clean and modern, and our room was about as large as you'd expect for a hotel in this New York price range. The location was fantastic, and I found the staff kind and helpful. I liked the hotel overall. It is really loud, though. Only one elevator was working while we were there, and it made a ton of noise. We got used to it and it didn't keep us awake, but it was distracting. Light sleepers might have a hard time.
