I only stayed one night, during what seemed like New York's coldest week of the year, and the staff couldn't have been warmer. They kindly upgraded me to a suite at no charge, which was marvelous: beautiful furniture, lots of room, and a bed set a little lower to the floor, which I loved. The shower was one of the best I've had in a New York hotel. I don't often stay in places like this, so my little treat-yourself night felt extra special. I'll definitely come back and recommend it to anyone wanting a bit of luxury in New York.
Dante made our visit memorable even though we couldn't get into Bemelmans bar that evening. We'd hoped to have a cocktail, but there were artists in residence and the bar was closed to anyone who wasn't staying at the hotel. He kindly explained what was going on, then gave us a short history of the hotel and the hand painting by author , Ludwig Bemelman. Talking with him became a highlight of our trip and made us want to stay at the Carlyle next time. We loved having champagne there the next day before leaving. Thanks, Dante, for such a lovely introduction and a lasting impression. Cheers to wonderful service.
Tea at the Carlyle felt magical, and I'd recommend it. The hotel itself was beautiful, and they had excellent gluten-free choices for me. My daughter doesn't need to eat gluten-free, and her food looked delicious too. An illustrator was there drawing pictures of each group having tea. Her work made our day, and the pictures are precious. Our server and server captain were polite and attentive, checking in each day to ask how the food was.
Our family of four had a great one-night stay at the Carlyle. The deluxe suite was huge for New York, with a separate living room and room for everyone. We were on a high floor, and the view from all the rooms was amazing. The bathrooms were quite tight with just one sink, though, and the rooms felt dated, like they hadn't been renovated in a long time. The location worked really well for shopping near Madison Avenue. I could walk to some favorite stores in under 20 minutes. It's also kid-friendly if everyone behaves appropriately, and people were nice overall. At check-in, our room wasn't ready when promised. The concierge understood and quickly made it up to us with a later checkout. Breakfast service was just okay: they got my drink order wrong several times and then weren't sure if I'd asked for decaf or regular. Housekeeping was very sweet and came up at 11 at night with extra sheets because my brother and I didn't have enough.
I stayed two nights with my daughter in a twin room on the 12th floor. With the cold weather outside, the room wouldn't warm up. Staff responded quickly and sent a very kind technician to check the heat. They said the building was so old there wasn't more they could do, apart from bringing space heaters, which helped somewhat. About two and a half weeks after the trip, I noticed red bumps and unbearable itching, especially on my feet at night. After seeing my PCP and a dermatologist, I was diagnosed and treated for scabies. Thankfully, my young daughter didn't get it since we had separate beds. I hadn't stayed or traveled anywhere after New York, and nobody else in my family had bites or symptoms. I called the hotel to let them know. I wasn't asking for a refund and don't want one. I only asked for a copy of the report showing the bed had been properly inspected, so future guests wouldn't have to go through this. They refused to send reports or any documentation that the issue in the room had been remedied. In an email, they said, "an outside company tested the room 1212 on Saturday and the results were negative for all biting bugs."
