Days Inn by Wyndham Newport News City Center Oyster Point

A decent mid-range hotel with great staff, and fine for a night stop or a few vacation days. I usually book non-smoking and just go outside, but once I got a smoking room on the third floor. My only real issue there was being next to the side door, which kept slamming all night. That wasn't a problem on the other floors.

Darius at afternoon customer service was rude and unprofessional. At 3:30 p.m. he had to check with housekeeping about clean rooms before checking us in, and seemed annoyed we'd come then. People were smoking weed outside the exit, right by our room door. I was in room 138 and told both the night desk, including Ms. Betty, and Booking.com. The night representative couldn't cancel because it was prepaid, and Booking.com said it couldn't cancel or refund it. The manager lives at the hotel and was extremely unhelpful the next day. Nobody helped resolve this. Don't stay here if you don't participate in the consumption.

Neither room was properly ready. The first hadn't been cleaned after the previous guest. When I went to tell the desk clerk, who had been too busy on her phone to acknowledge me and then got nasty when I spoke up, she asked what I expected her to do. I asked for another room. That one had no towels or shower curtain, and the toilet was too dirty to use. They tossed towels and a curtain at me, which I had to put up myself, and didn't have anyone clean the toilet. The room smelled of urine and bad body odor. I've never had a worse hotel stay. It should be zero stars.

We gave up and checked out at 4:30 in the morning after a terrible stay. The brick-hard bed gave neither my wife nor me more than an hour or so of fitful sleep. At checkout the woman at the desk didn't say a word, while someone from the lobby approached us, asked where we were going and about a train station, then asked for a ride. She seemed under the influence of something or possibly mentally challenged. After we declined, she followed us out and asked us to ask the clerk for our room for the rest of the morning. We'd come to Newport News for a funeral on May 3. I'm handicapped and can't use a regular tub and shower, so I booked an accessible room at the Days Inn at Oyster Point, with early check-in for an extra $20 so we could rest and shower first. The room had been given away when we arrived. The apologetic manager said there was nothing she could do, and there was no time to find somewhere else. My wife had to pour cups of water over my head to wash my hair. We couldn't rest or shower before the funeral. People hanging around the lobby and outside weren't a welcoming sight. The room was generally clean, but had a large handprint on the mirror, and the vinyl headboard and footstool looked as if cats had used them as scratching posts. I wouldn't recommend anyone stay here.
