Clarkeston Inn

Our room was enormous, nicely decorated, and had a super comfortable bed. This charming guest house is in an amazing spot and has off-street parking. Just know that breakfast is included only with certain rates. We booked through a discount site for a lower price, so breakfast wasn't part of our booking.

We paid nearly $400 before tax, and even the room we eventually got at Melville House felt run down. The whole experience left us feeling the owner had been slick with us and had tried to make an inferior room at Clarkeston sound like an upgrade. We'd booked a two-room suite at Melville House, part of the same Inns of Newport, for us and our child. On the morning we were due to arrive, the owner called to confirm and said we had the two-room suite lined up. He told us we'd be “pleasantly surprised.” We weren't. Instead, we were sent across the street to the dingy “family suite” at Clarkeston. The carpets were stained, the kitchen was ugly, and its refrigerator ran constantly. There was no charm to the place. The second room had a pull-out couch, but there were no pillows for sleeping and no extras anywhere. We only had the two pillows from our own bed, so our child ended up in bed with us, which defeated the point of booking two rooms and two beds. I called that night to complain and was told to talk to the owner the next day. When I did, he said that wasn't acceptable and offered to move us to a two-room suite in Melville House, exactly what we'd originally booked.

We stayed in Mrs. Oelrich’s room for a weekend away, and it was clean, charming, and comfortable. The inn is stunning and right in downtown Newport. Breakfast was delicious, and the staff were kind and accommodating. It made for the perfect little hideaway for me and my boyfriend.

Rick, the owner, takes a hands-on approach and made sure guests were having a nice stay. The B&B was very clean, with nice bed linens, and just a short walk from the Wharf and everything else. We had a great time and I'd gladly recommend it.
