Marshall Slocum Inn

We met interesting guests from around the world and spent a lot of time in the cozy common space. The wine for sale and a table that was just right for late-night card games were a treat. Breakfast brought fresh pastries each morning, and the other thoughtful touches made our stay special. I slept three nights in a row without backache or tossing and turning, which never happens, so I’m making my husband buy the same mattress for our house. Our room and our friends’ room were both charming, spotless, and beautiful. The whole place felt like a welcoming grandmother’s home with a refined New England touch. From arrival, every detail felt considered, like a well-loved, established bed and breakfast. Marshall Slocum Inn is close to everything in Newport and radiates warmth, comfort, and timeless charm. Highly recommend.

The location is excellent, and the rooms were stylish, clean, and clearly well maintained. Our stay was still pleasant, thanks in part to beautiful Newport, but for the price we expected a better breakfast. It’s very simple, just freshly baked pastries, and not worth waiting for in the morning. The breakfast pictures on Google Maps are outdated. Other guests mentioned friendly staff, but we never saw anyone. From the afternoon on, it felt like we were on our own.

The Marshall Slocum Inn is a historic gem, set on a pleasant, beautiful stretch of Kay Street just off Bellevue Avenue, near Newport’s famous Gilded Age mansions. From there it’s easy to reach the beaches, harbor, colonial history, restaurants, shops, and mansions. We appreciated the free parking, too. Our room, The Snuggery, was spotless, cozy, and tastefully decorated, with the care of a thoughtfully appointed property. The indoor and outdoor common areas were handsome and inviting, good places to unwind with a book or music after exploring. Breakfast had delicious treats to start each day, and the inn itself was comfortable enough that we were happy to spend a few hours enjoying its warm atmosphere. Many thanks to Mark, the helpful, affable, engaging innkeeper and an excellent host. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and look forward to returning. We highly recommend the inn to anyone visiting Newport.

We appreciated how quiet The Marshall Slocum House was, especially after full days exploring. It’s on a peaceful street, yet a short walk from one of Newport’s main roads, where we could catch the free Newport trolley to the mansions and other attractions. Thames Street’s shops and restaurants were walkable too, with a bit more effort. Dana welcomed us so graciously that we felt at ease as soon as we arrived, travel tired and all. Mornings started with coffee or tea, croissants, and assorted pastries. In the evenings, the complimentary nook of jellied candy was a tasty little treat. Our bed was comfortable, and the room and bathroom were nicely decorated, clean, and equipped with what we needed. We’d happily recommend the inn. It helped make our Newport trip truly lovely.
