Extended Stay America- Kansas City - Metcalf Ave

I paid $77 a night for a one-bedroom suite with a king bed and sofa sleeper, which seemed inexpensive compared with other places nearby. The hotel is older and could use remodeling, though the dated furniture and fixtures seemed reasonable at that price. My room needed a better clean: I wiped down the surfaces, and the parquet floor was so dirty I didn't go barefoot. The bedding and towels were clean and freshly laundered, and I found no bedbugs when I checked the mattress and pillows. The mattress and pillows were uncomfortable, and the towels were clean but small and thin. It did make me wonder how much time housekeeping gets to clean each room, and whether more time and better pay might help. I had no complaints about the staff. Henry, David, and the other front desk staff at Extended Stay Overland Park Kansas were friendly and helpful. They brought kitchen utensils, extra towels, and bedding when I asked, and the cleaning staff greeted me in the halls. They were wonderful and welcoming, upbeat, and ready to help. This is an extended-stay place for a few days or longer.

The full-size fridge and kitchenette came in handy, and the rooms are spacious. Those blackout curtains are amazing. I'll stay here again next time I'm in town.

The room was affordable, clean, and had useful amenities, including a stove, full fridge, and microwave. The bed was clean and covered, and the floors and kitchen area were clean too. Staff were nice, and the room had a lot going for it, so I expect we'll stay again. I can understand some of the lower ratings, though people should keep the price in mind. It felt like the staff work hard to clean and repair things with limited tools or money. We'd booked the wrong location through no fault of the hotel. Corporate fixed it quickly and politely. There were still some problems in the room: the shower handle had an obvious temporary repair and was hard to use, the water took almost six minutes to heat up, and it was difficult to get a comfortable temperature. One of our four towels had a stain that concerned me. We only needed two, so I put it with the one used for the floor mat. It looked like an old stain, not fresh soil. The curtain fabric had a large tear, but it wasn't easy to notice and affected only one layer, so it could still block light.

The one good thing was that the front desk staff were helpful and accommodating. Our first room's bathroom sink hadn't been cleaned at all, so they moved us, but the next room had no toilet paper. It smelled odd, had dust in the corners and hair in the shower, and the linens were worn and stained. Towels were tiny and thin. The mattress was okay, but the pillows were awful and lumpy. The walls are thin, so there was lots of noise. The kitchenette was no use to us without dishes, utensils, dish soap, paper towels, or dishwasher tabs. For this same price, we've had much cleaner rooms and better amenities at Comfort Inns and AirBnBs. I wouldn't recommend this hotel.
