Hilton Portland Downtown

The location is excellent, and there are plenty of shops within walking distance. My room was clean overall, but on check-in day I was put in Room 419, where the air-conditioning was extremely loud. I couldn’t tell whether it came from the indoor or outdoor unit, but it made falling asleep almost impossible. The self-parking entrance is also very narrow. I had a large SUV and needed to be really careful going in and out. There were lots of visible scrape marks on the walls on both sides.

The lobby decorations were beautiful, and both the breakfast server and chef were really kind. There was only one of each, though, and they couldn’t keep up with the guests waiting. The whole situation felt uncomfortable, even though we were patient. Our bathtub also wouldn’t drain properly. If they sort out these details, everything would be excellent.

Those pillows are so soft, and I love the beds and rooms here. I’ll stay whenever I get the chance, though I wish I could afford to come every night. I first stayed seven years ago, and the change in service is striking. Back then staff were attentive and I even had a personal concierge. This time they were unfriendly, seemed annoyed when I asked questions, didn’t know the area, and wouldn’t help a lady with her bags. I miss that attentive service. I still love the hotel, but don’t expect much from the staff.

The rate was pretty good for right in downtown Portland, and the bar was nice. The lobby concessions, though, are ridiculously overpriced, as you might expect. I was in town for a race and wanted an Epsom salt bath to freshen up, but the shower plug didn’t work. I filed a service request and gave up on it. Then, after we’d gone to bed, an Engineering service tech came banging on the door around 10:30 PM. That seemed pretty unorthodox and definitely messed with my sleep rhythm. Still, I’d stay again, 4/5.
