The Wedding Cake House

This feels more like an artists’ retreat than a regular hotel. It’s an old-fashioned themed destination, so don’t book if that style isn’t for you. The 1800s home is well maintained, with locally made, labor-intensive carpets and blankets from small artists. They host events and artist residencies, and the restoration was done by artists rather than gutting the interior into a blank new space. It’s a beautiful, fun place to visit. I saw someone complain about the lack of TVs and that it’s old, but that’s the point.

We left after one night, even though we often stay in B&Bs, and it was bad enough that I wouldn’t return. There were cockroaches in the dining room, which we killed, and breakfast was a big letdown. This isn’t a standard B&B. The place wasn’t clean, there’s no TV, and wind rattled the storm windows all night and kept us awake. The shower only has a rain head and the tile design felt creepy. The floors creak and the walls are thin, so it’s noisy. I was drawn in by the five-star reviews, but now I wonder whether they’re legitimate. I read many of the one-star reviews afterward and they seemed accurate, buried under those hard-to-believe five-star ratings. No experienced traveler would rate it that highly. We prepaid for a second night and got no refund; we were told a manager would call, but that never happened. Beware.

A lovely historic B&B with comfortable rooms, plenty of staff, and little artistic touches all around. The profits support artists, too. I’d absolutely come back, 10/10.

We spent a lovely romantic night here, and I enjoyed the oat-based breakfast choices, including trying coffee milk for the first time. There was a nice bath, a good sleep in a large, beautiful room, and time to read outside on the lawn. We also got a postcard. It’s cool to support local artists and stay in a place that feels like a work of art. I loved the charming book of stories and art about the house in the room. I’d highly recommend it for a Providence visit.
