Hampton Inn & Suites Richmond - Downtown

The shower in my original room was dangerously hot and unusable, with a risk of burns. After a day without being able to shower, I was moved to another room, which smelled strongly of mold or mildew. The manager said it had recently reopened after a leak. I was then sent back to my original room and told I could use a separate room to shower, even though it was under maintenance for HVAC issues. I stayed three nights, and the significant problems throughout were never adequately resolved. This was the worst hotel experience I’ve had.

The room was nice and clean, and breakfast was okay. I’d give the stay 4.5 stars. The room I got at check-in wasn’t the one I’d reserved, but guest services fixed that without any trouble. The bed made a metallic support noise when I sat on the edge, though I didn’t notice it lying down. The shower was weak. They’d run out of orange juice at breakfast, but staff restocked it quickly.

I had to change my review after arriving last night and finding homeless people in the lobby. The room was cold, the thermostat was confusing when all it needed was to go up or down, and there were no extra blankets. Then this morning the shower had no pressure at all. The water literally just dribbled out. Unbelievable.

The staff were friendly, breakfast was good, and the room was clean. There’s a nice workout area, and it’s an easy walk to Allianz Riverfront Amphitheater. Still, I’m giving it four stars because the arrival was confusing, the market had few items, and the bath soap was tiny. I arrived after midnight and the online address led me to a lobby entrance with a Post Office. I could see the desk inside, but the doors were locked, with no instructions on how to get in or where to park. I drove around to the side, found a connected sister hotel, and checked in there; they then explained where to park. There was also a patio overlooking downtown that was locked, so I couldn’t enjoy one of the features that had led me to choose the hotel.
