The three stars are because we didn’t get an upgrade despite being eligible, and the place seemed completely full. We checked in at 3:00 pm on Saturday, with all the pools packed, which I guess was because summer had started. Dinner took planning too. Without a reservation, the steak restaurant wasn’t an option, while the other restaurant had a wait of around 30 minutes or more. Even after we got a table and ordered, the meals took 45 minutes to arrive. Kids who like frozen drinks should get them at the pool, since the other bars and restaurants don’t have them. Every trash can was full. We’re Marriott Bonvoy members and love the brand, and usually haven’t had bad hotel experiences. The people we spoke with here were kind and respectful, and gave great customer service.

The pool was the big hit with our kids, especially the beach area, and the resort has plenty of activities for them. But when we arrived around 4 on Saturday, the pools were packed, trash bins were overflowing, towels were scattered everywhere, and we circled several times before finding one chair for our things. There was litter across the sand too. A lot of the seating around every pool was marked as premium reserved, at $50 per chair, and sat unused. Cabanas and a few paid seats make sense, but this was several rows. The next morning, two attendants approached us about buying premium seats. We found a spot ourselves and declined. Later I heard them tell a manager that few people were buying them. The manager said, “once the regular chairs fill up, people will be forced to pay for the seating.” That’s ridiculous when we’re already paying a premium to stay there, and need somewhere to put our belongings. Our suite was quiet, spacious, and had a nice patio with a table and couch. The kitchenette also worked well as a dark place for our baby to sleep. Still, the online description said the parlor suite slept five and mentioned a Murphy bed. We assumed that bed was in addition to another one. It was the only bed, there was no pullout couch, and the triangular couch would have been awkward to sleep on. We should have read the details more carefully, but the listing did feel a bit deceptive. Thankfully, someone at the lobby quickly sent up two rollaway beds, even though the check-in line was still long. At $900 a night, it felt silly that everyone was sleeping on pullouts or rollaways. Housekeeping made the beds and arranged our toiletries, but didn’t wipe surfaces or vacuum. We left used glasses stacked neatly and they were still there. At least the check-in line, though long on Saturday afternoon, moved quickly. Everyone we interacted with was kind and welcoming. There were scavenger hunts, bingo, crafts, rubber duck races, and lots more for kids. We also enjoyed the Topgolf swing suites. Dining and room service were quick, the food was good, and Rivertop’s sometimes-long lines moved fast. We’ll come back because our kids loved it and it’s an easy family resort. We’ll just adjust our expectations next time.

We left feeling refreshed and already want to return. The resort had a nice balance of family fun, relaxing spaces, and luxury, and the atmosphere made us feel valued as guests. Even though the property is large, it felt calm and inviting. The pools, lazy river, restaurants, and outdoor areas were all in great shape, with options for relaxing, spending time together, or recharging. The thoughtful design and beautiful surroundings added to that peaceful feel. The staff were a highlight. Everyone we spoke with was warm, sincere, and professional, and it felt like they really cared about making our stay memorable. That attention and kindness made a real difference.

Chelley’s care is what made our Mother’s Day weekend memorable. She arranged for most of our family and friends to stay on the same floor or nearby, which made it much easier and more enjoyable to spend the weekend together. She also helped a member of our group bring the food she needed into the pool area. Her understanding and willingness to help meant a lot to us. Then we found a thoughtful welcome note from her in our room, a lovely personal touch. The JW Marriott San Antonio Hill Country Resort & Spa was a peaceful, beautiful setting for a family getaway, and the hospitality was excellent from check-in onward. Chelley made us feel welcomed, valued, and cared for. She’s professional, compassionate, attentive, and genuinely kind. The whole experience reflected a serene, luxurious place where you can relax and enjoy time together. We’ll absolutely return. Thank you to Chelley and the entire JW Marriott team for making our Mother’s Day weekend so meaningful.

We’ll be back. The meals at Fiamme and 18 Oaks Steakhouse were both highlights, with a great atmosphere and an excellent dinner at 18 Oaks. Ayham at Fiamme was friendly and attentive, and made things feel personal. The pizza hit the spot. Giovanni at the front desk made check-in easy, even during a busy stay. Renne in Reservations was fantastic too, and helped everything come together smoothly while we coordinated our plans. Thanks to all three for taking such good care of us. Service throughout the JW Marriott San Antonio really stood out.
