La Quinta Inn & Suites by Wyndham San Diego Mission Bay

It's a great place to stay for the price, and they keep it really clean. The hotel is conveniently close to the freeway, though you can hear it a bit. Getting to Mission Bay isn't as easy as you'd think, and the drive takes longer than expected. Still, I'm definitely not going to complain for what it costs.

I was in town for a softball tournament at Hickman Field. The room and beds were clean, and the front desk staff were helpful. Breakfast was decent enough to get us through until lunch, though there was no waffle maker. The main downside was the shower: a large part of the tub was rusty, and there was a little mold on the caulk around it.

We booked through Airbnb without knowing the area, then got there and felt uneasy about how sketchy it seemed. The Airbnb reviews had looked decent, but my wife checked Google and Yelp and found a surprising number of people reporting car break-ins. We decided to leave and checked out about five minutes after arriving. The hotel denied our refund.

It was quiet at night, even with our dogs, and being close to La Jolla was handy for our visit. The hotel was dog friendly, and the rooms were clean, though otherwise it was just an OK place. There were homeless people in the area, but they kept to themselves. We smelled marijuana outside both days, not inside the building. Parking is a real squeeze, with small, narrow stalls. The scrapes on the pillars and building make it look like plenty of people have trouble getting around the lot, and a full size truck would be a bad fit. Breakfast was pretty blah. Still, we’d stay again if we were back in the area.
