Moxy San Diego Downtown/Gaslamp Quarter

The Gaslamp Quarter location is excellent, but most of the rest fell short. The bar and reception setup sounds fun in theory, yet one employee was left to handle check-ins and drinks, so people had to wait and got frustrated. The rooms are tiny, with no closet or safe, just a few hooks on the wall. The price reflects that, so it wasn’t a shock, but there’s little comfort or functionality. Cleanliness was acceptable but inconsistent, with several areas visibly rough around the edges. Valet costs $50 a night and is handled by a third-party contractor. It felt like a rip-off. Street parking is free from 10 p.m. to 9 a.m., and you can often get by with feeding the meter a few dollars otherwise. The evening staff woman was friendly and genuinely helpful. Another front desk employee, a man wearing ridiculous flag earrings, came across as smug, condescending, and unprofessional. That attitude was unnecessary, and customer service may not be the right line of work for him. Good location, undermined by staffing, impractical rooms, costly parking, and uneven service.

Bella made a big difference while I waited for my room. She checked me in, chatted with me about San Diego since I’d never been, and was understanding when I told her about my bad night at a Hilton. I had a few beers as I waited. The service and hospitality were outstanding, even though I’d arrived with high expectations after staying at Moxys around the world and at a Hilton the night before, not by choice. The room turned out perfect, and the view was amazing. Elevators were quick, hallways were clean, and the shower and bed were immaculate, unlike at Hilton. The Moxy itself would’ve been enough, but Bella went above and beyond to make up for the competitor experience, if you can call them that. I was very happy with my stay and will definitely return, 10/10. The Gaslamp area could use some homeless removal, though maybe that’s just a California thing. Someone should give Bella a raise or paid vacation, she’s seriously the best.

There’s plenty to do within walking distance, including clubs, free comedy shows, and lots of restaurants. I’d stay again next time I fly in from Oregon. It’s such a fun hotel. Check-in happens at the bar and comes with a free drink. The bartenders are beautiful, the rooms are great, and the showers are incredible.

The location right in the heart of gaslamp gives the hotel a lively, upbeat feel, and I’m already looking forward to staying again. I had a great experience: the staff were warm and friendly, and the bar-style setup is a really cool idea. The rooms feel intimate and cozy, especially if you’re traveling alone.
