The cleaning crew were the bright spot: they were lovely and kept our room in great shape. The rest of the experience was frustrating, and I won't return. I booked through the Chase Edit program for its extra benefits, but none came through. I knew an upgrade depended on availability, though I'd contacted the concierge ahead of time to request an upper floor. We were placed on the lowest guest floor, and the promised welcome amenity never arrived. The desk also refused the $100 hotel credit and breakfast benefit because I didn't have my physical Chase card, only the virtual card on my phone. I travel with lots of cards and don't carry every plastic one. I've never had this problem at another Chase hotel. Even after I got the Chase concierge on the phone to confirm my card was active and speak to the manager, they wouldn't change their decision. It felt like they were finding reasons to withhold benefits we'd paid for.
The location made it easy to walk around the Gaslamp District, and the team was friendly and professional. Our room was clean, the bed was comfortable, and I slept well. The valet service was prompt, too. A couple of things fell short of what I expect from a higher-end hotel. Breakfast took two hours to arrive through room service on Sunday, which is far too long for a five-star place. Our bags were supposed to be brought up while we waited to check in, but we had to call about them because we were pressed for time before dinner. There was no fridge in the room, which seemed odd. The entrance is awkward, with access from both sides, and parked cars or trucks unloading sometimes block it. Things went reasonably well, but my expectations weren't met.
The lobby is lovely to wander through, and the hotel has an interesting history. Plaques explain which areas have been restored or renovated, including a meeting room that used to be the wine cellar. The in-room dining menu even included a copy of the hotel's menu from the 1940s. It was fun seeing how the food and prices have changed. Our room also felt like a real upgrade from an average hotel. The finishes were fancy, from the artwork to the bathroom fixtures, and it was nicely furnished. The soaps and lotion smelled amazing. There's a bathroom card saying you'll be charged $62 if you take them home, which may explain why they mention it.
The vegan in-room dining choices could use work. Fruit was the only option I saw. Aside from that, we had a great staycation and thought it was good value. The hotel is beautiful and right in the heart of San Diego, with live music in the lobby. Everyone we dealt with, from check-in to in-room dining, was professional, friendly, attentive, and really helpful. Our room was clean, and the provided products were good quality. My husband left his coat behind, but getting it back after checkout was no problem at all. We definitely plan to return.
The hotel looks fancy and the staff dress well, but the service manners need work. We waited 15 minutes at the entrance while valet staff stood around without greeting us. We had to ask where check-in was before they took our car. There was no pool or jacuzzi, and the single restaurant had a limited menu. The AC fan was also extremely loud, like something in a low-end motel.
