1906 Mission

A little hidden gem in the mission district. The patio’s a nice spot for morning coffee, which they provide along with paper plates for meals. The kitchen is clean and has everything you need to cook for yourself. Housekeeping cleans the showers and bathrooms every day, and the whole place is very clean and quiet. The staff are wonderful, and hotel staff deal with concerns right away. You really get your money’s worth here!

A budget-friendly option, but be aware that there’s no air conditioning on the third floor, and the room gets really hot in summer. I’m not sure why that wasn’t mentioned in the reviews or amenities description. Maybe rooms with only fans are fine in winter. The front desk wasn’t staffed.

At $85 for a Friday night in November, you get what you pay for, but I’m not sure the savings are worth it. There’s no elevator, either. The clean bathrooms at the far end of the building were always available, and the one staff member I met was kind. My room, 302, faced the Mission St rest side. The windows were nice but did nothing to block street noise. Buses, trucks, and people yelling below were so loud that I needed earplugs, which also helped with the nonstop high pitched whirring from the headboard light. The people on the street didn’t seem dangerous, but they made the stay uncomfortable. The room itself felt plain and uncared for. The sheets were basic and stained, and the furniture, drapes, linens, and walls all needed repairs or replacing. It’s sad to see a place that was once kind of hip become rundown and loud, as others have said.

This could work if you can put up with its problems, but I found it risky. There’s no manager or receptionist on site when you need help. If you leave your phone behind when going to the bathroom and lock yourself out, you’re stuck. There’s a number to call, but nobody responds. You also need to check in through an app, and the instructions only arrive on the check-in date. If you’re busy that day, you could end up stranded on a street full of homeless people. The place isn’t well maintained either: wall signs are coming loose, there are holes in the bed sheet, and the window screen has fallen off.
