The Willows Inn

Public transit is right outside the door, and the staff made me feel welcome when I called ahead to say I might arrive early. They told me my room was already ready. I highly recommend it as a good place to crash while visiting the city. It's a charming little bed and breakfast tucked where Market, Church, and 14th Streets meet. From the street you can barely spot it, just a single orange entrance door, then a long staircase up to rooms on the second and third floors. It's a converted old hotel, but clean and cozy. My single room had a double bed, sink, TV, and closet, which was perfectly fine for a place to crash. It was clean and quiet. The showers and water closets are across the hall, clean and nicely appointed. Breakfast is served in the kitchen every morning, with granola, fresh fruit, tea, and bread.

It's a distinctive, comfortable bed and breakfast in a handy location, and the price is reasonable. The breakfast felt carefully put together and appealing, with lots of vegan choices, which I appreciated. The staff were pleasant and thoughtful. This place suits people who enjoy a bed and breakfast, rather than a sleek modern hotel, and I mean that as a compliment. There are stairs, so it won't work for someone with mobility impairments.

I've stayed at the Willows Inn for over 20 years, and I've never wanted to stay anywhere else in San Francisco. The inn is wonderfully clean, and the shared shower room and toilets are always clean too. Breakfast is just right: fruit, yogurt, juice, cafe, and hard-boiled eggs. It's near the BART stop, Safeway Market, and lots of food options, with easy travel by trolley or bart. I'm beyond happy, Mike, that the Innkeeper made it through the 2020 lockdown. My colleague recommended The Willows Inn while I was attending a conference at the Moscone Center, and it was just what I needed. It was quiet, comfortable, welcoming, close to public transit, and away from the crowds. I had several excellent meals nearby, including delicious food at Woodhouse Fish co across the street. It felt like staying with friends. The inn was clean, and I saw staff go above and beyond for guests. I'll absolutely stay here again when I'm in San Fran for work or vacation.
