University Inn

My friend and I slept like babies in the spacious, clean, comfortable room. I stayed Sunday night and loved it. Parking felt safe, and the hotel is right across from a nice hamburger place and brewery. Breakfast was grab-and-go, with decent options, and the coffee was great.

For one night and one bed, this is a safe, good old-school motel. The rooms were clean and the towels soft and absorbent. The couple running it will respond kindly if you come in pleasant, more or less. They’ve been mistreated before, so keep that in mind. They do make an effort with breakfast: microwave Jimmy Dean sausage, cheese, and muffin treats, plus packaged cream cheese and strawberry danishes that cost $2.50 at the C store, if that’s your idea of fine dining.

The room was simple and clean, and I liked the shower. Breakfast was a joke, just a microwaved biscuit sandwich, a truck stop pastry, or a banana. Juice or water cost extra. That’s not really breakfast and doesn’t justify the extra room charge. The property could use a fresh coat of paint.

At University Inn at San Luis Obispo, we booked a Queen bed but were given a Full-size bed instead. It was obvious, and when we raised it, the staff wouldn’t admit the mistake. They were dismissive and unprofessional, passing us from one person to another without fixing anything or taking responsibility. Their attitude turned a simple problem into a major inconvenience. The lack of basic customer service was shocking. This was one of my worst hotel experiences. I’d never stay here again and strongly recommend other travelers avoid it.
