Best Budget Inn San Marcos, TX

Just a heads-up, this two-story hotel has no elevator, so plan for stairs with luggage or a stroller. The place smelled strongly of food, and the floors were filthy. My child went barefoot for only a few minutes and their feet turned black. I had to scrub them with a rag. I picked it because reviews said the rooms were clean, which wasn't our experience.

Bicycle tourists should avoid this Red Roof Inn. They don't allow bikes on the property, and I had to work with Expedia to get my money back. In three years, after visiting about 30 states and staying at well over 100 motels, I've only encountered one other place with that rule. This seems to be an issue with this particular motel and owner, not a national Red Roof Inn policy: I've had nice stays at their locations in San Angelo, Texas, Manor, Texas, and Wisconsin. Expedia's policy information doesn't mention it either. There are better options nearby in San Marcos. I've stayed at Motel 6, Days Inn, Howard Johnson, La Quinta, and Best Budget Inn and can vouch for them. Super 8 was nice too, even though it had a sign saying a car was required to rent a room.

The pool was clean and empty when I went later in the evening, so I had it to myself. My bed was comfortable enough and seemed clean, and the AC worked really well. The bathroom toilet looked fairly new and was clean, though the rest could use an overhaul. The fridge didn't cool much, but the small freezer compartment kept my things cold without freezing them. It's an older Red Roof Inn, so the amenities are dated. I had to go to a gas station for a drink because the vending machine didn't take cards and I had no cash. The person who checked me in was polite, but didn't go out of their way with customer service. I'm not complaining, just saying how it was. My stay was comfortable and uneventful while I was there, so thanks.

The rooms were nice and the parking felt a little tight. Breakfast was more continental style. All in all, not a bad place.
