I booked a "Fully Refundable" stay at Spruce Lodge through Expedia, but the payment and refund process was frustrating. They charged the full amount upfront instead of the agreed 50%, which went against Expedia's payment schedule. When I cancelled within the free cancellation window, I got back slightly less, about 6% less. It took several days to hear back from the lodge. They called the reduction a “service processing fee.” Expedia later explained that it was a payment processor fee, not an intentional deduction by the hotel, but that fee had never been clearly disclosed when I booked. If the hotel knew it would apply, I think the listing should have said "partially refundable." I chose this place partly to keep my travel plans flexible. Other beautiful hotels in the area clearly said "partially refundable" or "non-refundable," so at least their policies were upfront. In the end I had to dispute the charge with my bank to get my money back. The unclear communication made this stressful. If transparent, honest billing matters to you, I'd look elsewhere. Proceed with caution.

The rooms were modern, new, and the beds were insanely comfortable. The bathroom was lovely too, and it was the nicest place I've ever stayed in Seward. We liked having kitchenettes so we could buy food at Safeway and bring it back, though there was a microwave but no oven. There are some things that concerned me. Parking is awkward, with tight areas to get through. The doors have no peepholes, which matters to me as a woman staying with my kids because I can't see who's knocking. The shower floor also needs non-stick grips, and maybe a bar. I nearly slipped, and with my bad back it tweaked my back. That feels like a safety hazard and could lead to bad legal trouble in the future.

It's a newer lodge with spacious rooms, a comfortable bed, and good shower pressure. But work was still going on in the rooms and building while we were there, and there was construction dust on the floor, baseboards, and bathroom vanity drawers. The room should have been cleaner. There was no one at the front desk, and when I asked housekeeping for 2 extra towels for our multiple day stay, the answer was, “We don’t do that”. A housekeeper even opened our door while my husband was coming out of the shower to give us a “Do Not Disturb” sign. Pretty ironic. With a kitchen in the room, Kleenex and paper towels would have been nice to have.

Self check-in was smooth, with clear instructions, and the location was convenient for both the port where our day cruises left and the park entrance to Exit Glacier. The rooms were spacious, modern, and very clean. I'd highly recommend this wonderful place for a trip to Seward.

We were on the second floor and had a mountain view. The place was quiet, close to town, and reasonably priced for our 4 night mid-August stay. Our clean, well-equipped queen studio had a full size refrigerator, stovetop, oven, and kitchenware, though the utensils were limited. Tea, coffee, and a maker were provided, but breakfast wasn't included. A restaurant is across the street, and there's a little coffee place on site. Paper towels would have been useful, and the sliding door shared between the bathroom and closet was a little annoying. The property is off the road to Exit Glacier.
