Hampton Inn South Haven

The upgrades seem to have made the hotel cleaner, and staying here is very comfortable. We sleep better here than at home, for some strange reason. We like getting two beds and using the extra comfortable pillows. There were plenty of towels too, which I appreciate since running out of clean washcloths or towels is aggravating. The phone charging pad and the plug on the other side of the bed for another charger are little things that make a difference. We stayed there again, and breakfast was actually better this time. I usually won't touch food if it looks cafeteria style, but the cheese omelettes, roasted potatoes, and kielbasa sausage were really good. Another thumbs up.

The sheets had marks that looked like bed bug spots, and the manager insisted they came from an ink pen in the wash. Maintenance first said they'd need to heat the room, then later at the desk, while we discussed a room refund, said he didn't know what the spots were. I was only given a partial refund of my points for “dirty sheets.” This place has bed bugs, or the staff either won't admit it or don't know how to recognize them. Don't stay here.

We stayed on 9/13/25 with my 95 year old mom, who uses a walker. Before booking, my niece asked whether there was an elevator and explained Mom's needs. They assured her there was one, so we accepted a third floor room because they said it would be quieter with a wedding party there. We took Mom and our luggage up, but when I went down with the cart I had to press the open button to get the elevator door to open. When I tried to go back up, it wasn't working at all. The desk manager said they'd been there earlier to fix it. He tried resetting it, then said he'd call to have someone return. I explained again that Mom was stuck on the third floor. He said he'd move us to the first floor after they fixed the elevator. It stayed broken. We left Mom in the room and brought back takeout instead of taking her to the nice dinner we'd planned. We eventually went to bed with a sign on the elevator saying it was broken, and nobody contacted us Saturday night. On Sunday morning, the desk told me it was still out and she didn't know when it would be fixed. The manager was out, and she didn't know when he'd be back. I asked what to do about Mom at checkout if it was still broken, but she had no answer. My niece and I started carrying our things to the car. I was near tears at the thought of making my 95 year old mom take the stairs. When I mentioned reviews saying the elevator had been an issue for around 9 months, the woman at the desk acted like this was news. I asked if the man who checked us in was the general manager, and she said he was. I can't understand why, knowing it had been a problem so long, he put us on the third floor. Another woman kindly offered to help with our bags and take Mom down the stairs in a wheelchair. I thanked her but declined because that seemed more dangerous than having Mom hold the rails and walk. I called Sunday evening to explain to the general manager how upsetting the stay had been, but was told he wasn't in, so I gave up. We won't return. If you have mobility issues, make sure you ask for a first floor room.

The rooms and bedding were dirty, and there was a stain all over the carpet. People were smoking weed and the hotel let them. The place smelled nasty.
