Howard Johnson Express - Springfield

I wouldn’t stay here again after two nights. The room was old, a bit smelly, and not very clean, with dust in nearly every corner and some rusty spots in the bathroom. The rest was quite okay, though if you just need one night to sleep and go, this place is fine.

We had a visitor stop by briefly, not staying overnight or causing trouble, and paying for their own accommodation elsewhere. Management called the police to “check us out” instead of talking to us. Their supposed “no visitor” policy was never explained at check-in, posted on signage, or given to us in writing. If it’s strict, they should make it clear beforehand. Getting police involved with paying guests over a brief visit felt like a humiliating, heavy-handed response to a basic situation. The room was what you’d expect from a place that handles minor issues by calling 911. The atmosphere was tense, unwelcoming, and embarrassing. Being escorted out over management’s failure to communicate isn’t what you expect when booking a hotel. This felt like laziness and a power trip, not a safety issue. The place should be called “Surprise Police Encounter Inn.” If you want hospitality, transparency, or respect, stay elsewhere. Avoid it unless you like paying for stress.

The bed was pretty comfortable and the hotel was relatively cheap, but the stay was far from good. There were crumbs and hair on the sheets, which weren’t properly cleaned or put on correctly, and on the floor. There was hair in the shower too, and we even saw two small cockroaches. Disgusting. The guy at reception was friendly, but his colleague sat there in sweatpants with his feet on the desk. That made a very unprofessional first impression. We didn’t stay for breakfast, so I can’t comment on it. Future guests should spend a few more bucks and pick another hotel.

We arrived with our youth hockey team after booking six rooms, but everyone left almost immediately. My room smelled awful and musty, and there was a dead roach stuck to the bathroom wall. The whole place felt gross and sketchy. The huge parking lot was nearly empty even though we were told the hotel was fully booked. It gave me a bad impression, and I can't believe Wyndham puts its name on this place. Very nasty.
