Fairfield Inn and Suites by Marriott Wheeling St Clairsville

We were only there briefly. The room was clean and comfortable, and the staff were pleasant and easy to reach.

The property has been renovated, and its location just off the interstate is convenient. We weren’t charged for parking, despite an online listing showing a $12 fee. I did wonder about crime nearby when I saw a security vehicle circling the lot, and overheard someone say his wedding band and earbuds had been taken from his room. The pool was the main disappointment. It wasn’t heated, and families with kids may want to call ahead to check whether it’s been fixed.

The morning ended with a burn on my hand from the waffle iron. Staff said three people had already been caught by it, including a child, and then it happened to a woman behind me too. They eventually took the machine out of service. When I brought my concerns to the front desk, I was told no one could help because it was the weekend. That wasn’t the only problem. The pool was so cold that several kids in our group had to get out, and the sofa bed mattress our son slept on was dirty. The AC quit around 1:00 AM; the desk said nothing could be done. We also had no Wi-Fi, so the TV didn’t work. We were told something underground had been cut and was awaiting repair, but it was never fixed. On the second floor, the ceiling was dripping on us as we walked to our room. I hope it was water. Our room door wouldn’t shut properly, and its bolt kept sliding out as if someone were locking it. One of us had to stay inside to get it closed.

The staff were friendly, but both rooms we were given were dirty. Our first door was already open when we arrived; inside, the bed looked slept in and there was a sandwich in the fridge. After we asked to move, the next room had urine on the toilet, a used-looking hand towel, and a dirty tissue on the floor. They also charge $13 a day for parking, which seems ridiculous in a non-metro area. I’d choose somewhere else if you can.
