We booked our stay at TownePlace Suites by Marriott Portland Vancouver with points, but the hotel also took our free night award, worth up to 85k points, without telling us. We only noticed it was gone when we tried to use it later, and had to contact Marriott support to find out what happened. There were other charges we weren't told about. We hadn't planned to bring our pet when booking but did in the end, and the front desk didn't clearly explain the pet and extra cleaning fees at check-in. They appeared on the final bill. We also picked up two bottles of water at the front desk. Nobody said they weren't complimentary, so as Platinum Elite members we assumed they were free, as they often are at other Marriott properties. Later we found an unexplained charge of over $7. This stay caused needless frustration and felt far below Marriott standards. Between the undisclosed fees and the way my rewards were handled, I can't recommend this property.

All three people I dealt with at reception were accommodating and professional, no matter which shift they were on. The woman who showed me the hot tub and fire pit was an 😇. Her kindness helped my back feel 100% better. Even the maintenance staff were friendly. You have a great team there. Very impressive, and thank you all.

There are lots of places to walk around the hotel, including a large, very clean park behind it, and plenty of shops and food nearby. The rooms and facilities were clean, the staff were nice, and it was just a great hotel to stay at.

We spent most of our time around the pool rather than in the lobby. On the first day it was packed with kids, as if a family staying there had invited all their friends and their children. Everyone behaved well and had a good time. The next day we had the area to ourselves. We read books, drank beers and relaxed. Across from the pool deck, still outdoors, there's a nicely planned fire pit and grilling area. The pool and hot tub shown on the website were the reason we picked this place for Labor Day weekend. The rooms were what you'd expect at a TownePlace, with a larger fridge, pots and pans, a few utensils, and brighter colors than a Residence Inn or Courtyard. You can also ask for things like a blender, slow cooker or air fryer. James, a nice kid, checked us in. He didn't offer water, which is supposed to happen for upper tier Marriott guests, but that was fine. The lobby didn't meet Bill Marriott's standard of a welcoming TownePlace lobby. There was no fireplace, and the worn seating looked old. It was also full of bags of to-go orders for the Homeland Security teams staying there. The hotel is in east Vancouver on Mill Plain, where all the businesses are in strip malls. This one had a bike-themed brewery, HUB, which recently closed and is slated to become another locally owned restaurant. Across the parking lot there's also a Portland-based French-themed bakery and cafe.

The park behind the hotel was a nice surprise, with a place for morning walks and a modern playground the kids loved. The neighborhood felt beautiful, upscale, safe and peaceful. I also appreciated the 24/7 gym, and housekeeping kept leaving extra supplies without us having to ask. Whenever we needed anything else, the front desk responded quickly. James and Bridget at the front desk were friendly, helpful, and went out of their way to make the stay comfortable. I had a fantastic experience from beginning to end, couldn't have asked for better, and will definitely come back. I highly recommend this hotel.
