For $123 a night, I expected much better service. We picked this hotel for its proximity to the Renaissance Fair grounds, not because it was the cheapest option. The AC, refrigerator, and microwave worked, but the rest of the stay was unpleasant. The room smelled stale, so we left the doors open for a long time to air it out. That also let out several flies that were already inside. There was someone else’s hair on the pillowcases, holes burned into the blankets, uncovered electrical outlets, and a large bubble of peeling paint on the bathroom ceiling that made showering under it feel unsafe. The bins had no liners and still contained previous guests’ garbage. The free breakfast included in the price was a bagel, and even getting that was difficult because the manager responsible for serving breakfast slept through his work hours each morning. During our three days there, staff never serviced the room, removed the garbage, or changed the towels. The front desk was unattended for much of the day and night. Checking out was complicated too: we had to call the hard-to-find manager and wait about 40 minutes for him to come take care of us.

The location was handy, near wineries, a pie shop, and the drive-in, with a good restaurant right across the street. The bed was fairly comfortable and there was a nice chair in the corner, but that was about all the room had going for it. There wasn’t even a proper bedspread. The WiFi barely worked, with one bar the whole time, and there was almost no cell service nearby. The TV turned on, but it was a Roku that needed an input selected, and there was no remote for that. The cable box remote couldn’t help, so the TV was useless. We also found food left in the fridge. Yuck. We booked for two people and got just one full-size towel. There was no hand soap, although the shower had body wash and “haip.” When we tried to call the front desk about the TV, the phone had no dial tone and wasn’t even connected to the wall. At checkout the desk was empty, so we had to call a cell number to get someone to take our key. At half the price, the room might have been fine. I won’t return to this motel.

The renovations were pretty decent, which makes it a shame that this motel just isn’t clean. The carpets, especially in the corners and under the bed, looked like they hadn’t been vacuumed for weeks, and there were hard, cruddy spots on them. The fleece blanket had three huge yellow stains. I don’t know whether they were old or new, but it shouldn’t have been used. The toilet was dirty along the side and base, and there were round brown things in the bathroom corner that looked like some kind of animal droppings. The freezer had a block of ice, hadn’t been defrosted in ages, and had no compartment door. I asked the owner when booking whether the rooms were clean, and he assured me they were. When I called the next morning about the condition, he said someone had been off the day before and he’d send someone up, but I’d already decided to leave. He made excuses about some, but not all, of my complaints, and acted like I was being unreasonable. When I called 24 hours later to say I was posting this, he still hadn’t gone to the room to see what I’d reported. It was Christmas Eve, and I would’ve left as soon as I arrived, but I was late for dinner and had nowhere else to go. “Free Breakfast” meant bagels and coffee with milk, no cream. There was no coffeemaker in the room, so the only coffee was in the office. The owner was nice, but after specifically asking about cleanliness, I expected someone to check the room before I arrived.

We’ve stayed here before and don’t expect luxury, but this visit wasn’t great. We were apparently the only guests, which was nice, though the room felt like it had been cleaned in a rush. The towels and sheets were scratchy, some pieces were missing from the bathroom blinds and left the room exposed to anyone outside, and the exterior walkways were crumbling in several places.

We came for the Spartan race and our wedding, and this motel’s location worked perfectly. I wish we’d stayed here in earlier years instead of dealing with a long drive on race day. The owner and staff were really nice and accommodating, and the restaurant/diner across the street was convenient and had great food. We’ll stay here again for future races or events.
