My parents already want to book the Salamander DC again next time they’re in town, which says plenty. I took my mom there for her birthday, and days after we got home she was still calling it the best birthday weekend she’s ever had. The hotel sits by the Washington Channel and the Potomac, so it feels peaceful and away from downtown bustle while still being close to the National Mall and The Wharf. Our room was spotless and comfortable, and my mom slept unusually well for a trip. Everyone we dealt with was welcoming and attentive. Amex Travel included breakfast for two with my booking. It was genuinely delicious, not just decent by hotel standards. A great choice for a special occasion.

We left our anniversary stay frustrated, and we won’t be coming back. My husband had arranged the same suite where we spent the night we got married, hoping to make our first anniversary meaningful. He booked weeks ahead and called to confirm flowers and specific treats for the room. The wrong items arrived hours late, and the hotel never brought the flowers, though they had confirmed receiving them. The only explanation was “miscommunication.” The suite is beautifully designed, but the stay didn’t feel five-star beyond its looks. At arrival, valet assumed we were going to Dogon for dinner, and nobody offered to help with our bags, even while assisting other guests. I’m 7 weeks pregnant, so I noticed the lack of care. Check-in was slow and confusing too. Breakfast was included but charged to our room, and the food was very mediocre. The TVs wouldn’t connect to streaming, turndown felt reluctant, and I felt too unwell for our dinner reservation, so we ordered room service. My Wagyu burger was dry and bland. The next morning, the manager agreed there were no excuses and said it came down to internal miscommunication. That didn’t undo the disappointment in a trip my husband had planned so carefully.

The location made getting around easy, with national museums and the lively DC Wharf area both within walking distance. I spent three nights at the Salamander Washington, DC, and had a very good stay. The bed was especially comfortable after long sightseeing days. The room was comfortable, and the bathroom was spotless and clearly well cared for. The food was outstanding as well. Ms. Dolly deserves a special mention for being warm, attentive, and professional. She made dining feel memorable through her genuine hospitality. I’d recommend the hotel and would gladly stay again.

The basic room problems kept piling up. Our new room had urine in the toilet, while our travel partners found a visibly dirty bathtub and almost no water pressure. We had no body wash, and their room had no conditioner. We also waited three hours for utensils, calling three times to remind staff. By then our food was cold. We’d booked Salamander Washington DC through Amex Platinum for February 13-15, traveling as a family of four. For weeks before arrival I’d asked by email for adjoining or nearby rooms for our companions. We understood only one room was ready at early check-in, but were told the second would be across the hall. It took several more hours to be ready and was on another floor. Staff said they could move us closer, but only if we changed rooms after settling in. We were told the replacement would be ready in 30 minutes; it took over two hours. We almost missed dinner, and my husband stayed behind working it out with a manager. There was constant confusion between staff. We ordered drinks from Dogon for the lobby, the order was accepted, then a manager said we couldn’t have them there, then reversed that decision. At breakfast they couldn’t split the bill by room, and we felt pressured toward the buffet instead of ordering from the menu. Our key cards also stopped working hours before the guaranteed late checkout in our booking. We spent far too much of a short trip dealing with management and fixing basic service issues. For a luxury property at this price, the disorganization, cleanliness and inefficient service were extremely disappointing. I wouldn’t recommend it or return.

For a quick one-night getaway, it was a solid and perfectly pleasant stay, but I expected more of a curated luxury feel from the marketing. The room rates seemed fair, and the staff were professional, with satisfactory service. Still, I didn’t get the intuitive, above-and-beyond attention I associate with this price range. The atmosphere felt functional rather than immersive, without the distinctive high-end character that sets a five-star hotel apart from a standard upscale business hotel.
