Howard Johnson Express Inn - Wichita

Unless you can put up with the eek, I wouldn't stay here. The highway noise isn't too bad, but bring earplugs. There's an awful funky smell, stained bedding and carpet, and a crusted shower head. I called Wyndham direct to confirm they had a free shuttle, then arrived to find out, to my surprise, that THERE IS NO SHUTTLE SERVICE! It's at least a 5-minute Uber or Lyft. They didn't mention golfing or breakfast, though maybe they offer it.

Breakfast was just toast, and the juice machine was broken with no alternative offered. There was only one towel in the room, and when we asked for more, we were told they had none. I had to buy towels at a nearby WalMart to shower that night and the next morning. There were burn marks all over the tub and bedding too. While we were packing, my grandson lifted the bed skirt to get his sock and found a red substance dried in a puddle on the floor and up the bed platform. He thought it was blood, though I can't say for sure. At best, the room wasn't clean; at worst, it was a biohazard. I'd rather sleep in my car than stay there again. If this is what a Wyndham property is like, I'll avoid them all. I called Wyndham customer service, and they said they'd give me $14 off, which was a joke. I was still charged the full amount. Pretty sure the health department would shut this place down.

The room was comfortable and quite nice, and the staff were friendly. We were prepared for less after paying over $100 a night at some pretty awful motels, so this was a pleasant surprise. The one thing that bothered me was a call from the front desk about our dogs, asking for another $40. When I booked, I'd asked how much it would cost to bring two dogs, was quoted a price, and paid exactly that at check-in. I told the caller I'd already disclosed the dogs when making the reservation. Aside from that, we had a comfortable stay and I'd recommend it.

They lock all the back doors at 5pm, so after that you're stuck walking around to the main entrance. The hotel also looks old and run down, nothing like the photos online. They advertise breakfast, but there wasn't any.
