Red Roof Inn Williamsburg

The front desk clerk was rude and insufferable. I told her we had two couples and two children. She let us check in and charged my card, then waited until we were outside unloading the car in the cold with two small kids before coming over with a smirk to say we were over fire code and had to leave. If she'd handled it properly, the mistake would've been completely understandable. Instead, she acted like she was competing in a self-righteousness contest nobody told her existed.

I took my son on a little history tour because he loves history, and we had to keep to a limited budget. I booked a room and checked in late. There was hair in the bed and mold, a lot of it. I'm seriously allergic and started having an asthma attack. I grew up riding horses, so I'm not a prude, but this was bad. They refused to refund my money. I've never had an issue with Red Roof, but they'll never get my reservation again.

The rooms were very dirty, which made an already unsettling night even worse. Around 5:30 on Sunday morning, someone pounded on our door and on the door of the room where my wife and friend were staying. We went back to sleep, but it happened again, and then the phone rang. The caller said “Hi,” giggled, and made loud breathing sounds. It was creepy. After more banging, I latched the door and turned off the phone ringer. My wife and friend had a similar experience. I wish I’d called the front desk, but we were exhausted and disoriented after spending the day at Busch Gardens. The front desk staff were friendly, and they seemed weirded out when we told them. I’ve never had a hotel stay this strange, and I won’t return because I don’t want to risk something happening. I’m contacting corporate. Very bad.

The rooms had several problems: the bathroom door wouldn’t close all the way, the toilet handle barely worked, shower water spilled from the tub onto the floor, and we weren’t given enough towels. The ironing board was torn, and the floors were so dirty they left white socks filthy. We booked two rooms for four guests through hotels.com. The first two guests checked in, and when the rest of us arrived, we were told there was still a balance due. I didn’t understand why. After checking out, I found four separate charges of $131.25, which added up to my $525 total. The establishment said that was its process, which I found absolutely unheard of. I complained to red roof in and received only an apology email. I’d prefer a refund, since this could have been a much worse situation. The whole process was a mess. I don’t stay in hotels often, but I won’t stay at this establishment again. The Red Roof Inn needs to do better. The one near me is much cleaner.
