Alliance Hotel Tashkent

A very nice hotel, and I have no complaints. The rooms are clean and pleasant, with a fridge and electric kettle, plus extra toiletries and slippers. Staff can speak English and Russian, and payment is accepted in dollars, euros, or local currency. Breakfast downstairs was okay, and there's an iron available for clothes.

For $35 a night, this was good value, especially if you're in transit. I stayed two nights in December. It's near the airport, about 30 minutes by taxi, and within walking distance of Rustaveli Ave, where there are shops and fast food places. The room was clean, the bathroom looked new and spotless, the bathroom floor was warm from pipes underneath, and the linen was fresh. Breakfast was included from 7 to 10 am, with a good selection. My room was under the roof, with a triangular window, and it was cold, around 17 degrees. The stairway, by contrast, was very hot at about 25. Reception blamed poor gas supply from the city, but there weren't even heating radiators in the room, so that seemed to be the actual reason. The receptionist kindly brought an electric oil heater, though it wasn't enough for such a large room. There was also a claim on booking that local law prevented them from using a POS terminal, so they only accepted cash and gave no receipts. Many hotels in Tashkent take cards, so that explanation seemed like a lie. Otherwise, things were fine. It's a good option for the price, but be ready for a cold room.

There's no gym, and the pool is just a puddle. The staff also take a huge commission on day trips. We were in room 302 on the third floor. The ceiling is so low that you can't stand up in about 75% of the room. Each morning the sun woke me around 5, since the window had only a translucent white covering. They should use wood instead of aluminum on the roof and find a way to cover that attic window. Breakfast bread was always stale, along with some of the other items, so I'd avoid it.
