Lakeside House - Hanoi

The air conditioning gave off a musty smell, so I couldn’t use it. The room was noisy, with sounds from the hallway and neighboring rooms carrying through, and there were lots of mosquitoes. I also found dirty spots when I entered with the receptionist. He arranged for the room to be cleaned again, but cleanliness is non-negotiable for me. If staff have had a bad day, guests shouldn’t have to pay for it. The building being dated doesn’t bother me. Hygiene does. I arrived around 12:30 p.m. and asked for early check-in, since the official time was 2:00. The receptionist said I could do it for 50,000 Vietnamese Dong, about €1.62. I paid, though it seems strange to charge guests extra when the room is ready. I’ve had better service at other hotels. I’d booked a smaller room with one bed, but was told it wasn’t available. They gave me a larger room instead, which I didn’t need. I had no choice but to accept it. I’ve learned from past hotel stays to expect cleanliness, functionality, and what’s advertised. I don’t compromise on cleanliness. I wasn’t expecting a lot, but I was still disappointed. I understand it’s a relatively inexpensive room by Western standards, but hygiene shouldn’t be compromised.

The staff were so friendly and went out of their way to help with any issues. They arranged a great three-day trip to Ninh Binh, which I highly recommend. Scooter hire, laundry, and airport transfers were available at very affordable rates, too. It’s a great base in Hanoi: close to the main sights, but quiet, with lovely little coffee shops around the lake. I had a great stay and would happily come back on my next trip.

It’s right in the heart of Hanoi, with a nice view and great atmosphere. You can walk to just about any food or place you can imagine. The staff are friendly and helpful, and they can arrange tours to suit you as well as transport to the airport. This place is a gem. I’d highly recommend it to friends and family.

The owners were nice, and the room was good for the price. We were on the 4th floor, and it stayed very quiet throughout our stay. It’s in a calm part of the city, ideal for resting.
