The staff made us feel at home, always welcoming and happy to help. The guesthouse was clean, comfortable and beautifully maintained, and our stay there made the trip special.

I won't return to Roseland House. After I left some menstrual blood on a sheet, the hotel insisted I pay 50 Rand for the damage. I paid, but I left feeling deeply unsettled. The receptionist had insisted on inspecting my room before checkout. I let her in, then quietly admitted that some blood had got on a sheet because I hadn't realised my period had started the night before. She said the cleaning agents were allegedly expensive. I've stayed in hotels in 28 countries and have never encountered a policy like this. The cost of sheets with minor damage is usually part of what customers pay for a night's stay, whether the stain comes from menstruation or an older guest accidentally urinating or defecating. It doesn't seem worth losing a customer over. And the claim that blood damaged the sheet seems questionable to me. My female friends and I have got menstrual blood on our own clothes or sheets before getting a pad or tampon, and we've managed to clean the marks with ordinary household items, without expensive products. What bothers me most is what this could mean for women travelling. Imagine a teenage girl getting her first period while staying at Roseland House with her family, then having to show an employee the stain in front of her dad and brothers and explain, embarrassed, “Sorry, that was me.” She might never want to stay in a hotel again. Menstruation is a normal biological function for healthy women, and hotels like Roseland House shouldn't make travel harder for them. As a customer, I deserve to be treated with goodwill and dignity. The hotel said I'd made a mess and took more money from me. I feel they made their own mess in how they handled this, and this review is evidence of the harm done. I urge anyone considering a stay to choose somewhere else that respects both you and your wallet.
