King George's Guest House

I can't recommend King George’s Guest House in its current state. I booked expecting a 4-star stay because of the excellent reviews, but the room fell far short: it was dirty, poorly maintained, and not up to the advertised standard. Towels were worn, the bathmat had bleach stains, and there was visible algae in the shower. The handmade furniture was in poor condition too. When I brought this up, the owner was dismissive and defensive. They wouldn't acknowledge how serious the problems were or offer a solution. The response felt unprofessional, and my valid concerns were met with accusations and deflection. As a frequent traveler, I depend on honest reviews when making decisions, so I want others to know about these shortcomings. I hope management uses the feedback to improve the guesthouse, since it has the potential to meet the standards it advertises. I'd urge anyone considering a booking to take this experience into account.

The room was much bigger than we expected, and it had everything we needed for a night or two. Breakfast was fine, though the options were limited. Definitely try the omelettes. The staff were lovely and helpful. It was a good stop at the start or end of the Garden Route, but we didn’t find it quite as remarkable as some reviews suggest.

I was disappointed with the stay. The rating is four stars, but my experience felt below three. The bedside lamps weren’t working when I checked in, and they still hadn’t been fixed by checkout. One day there was no hot water either.

What stayed with me most was how attentive the owners were. They thought of every detail, and the meals they prepared for us were excellent. The place was spotless, with lovely decor and two sparkling, pristine pools set among relaxed, lush gardens. Our room was spacious and individually furnished, in one of two adjoining houses with classic style and plenty of comfort. I travel a lot, and this is one of the best guest houses I’ve stayed in. I’d choose it again next time I’m in the city.
