Paul and Patricia made a strong impression with their thoughtful care and conversations. They even took us on a guided day trip to Clarens, stopping in Golden Gate national park so Paul could point out beautiful sights and give us time to enjoy the drive. He showed us some local places in Clarens too. Boo and Knox, our two fur babies, happily came along. This was our second visit, and the four days felt like a real break from the busyness of Johannesburg. The hotel is charming, beautiful and pet friendly, and our boys were warmly welcomed. The food was excellent and kept us full at breakfast and dinner. Thanks, Paul and Patricia. We hope to visit Drakensberg Mountain Retreat again.

John pointed us to a lovely walk starting at the retreat, and the views and breeze along the way were special. We took a little over two hours, with a few detours. Part of the route follows the edge, so it’s really not recommended when the ground is wet and slippery. We’d driven to the gate planning a day hike and hadn’t realised the place wasn’t open to day visitors, but luckily we were able to get in. We saw cows and horses enjoying their freedom, with fresh air, lots of grass, and water from the lakes.

The birthday braai was a lovely surprise, and I was also taken on a great outing to the bakery and chocolate factory, among other places. Breakfasts and dinners were freshly made and delicious, and mealtimes had a wonderful family feel. Paul, Patricia and the team made me feel so special during my October 2025 birthday break. They were warm hosts who really went above and beyond. The beautiful natural setting made it all even better. Highly recommended.

Wild horses ate carrots from our hands, and baboons came by to visit. With those sights and the amazing views, it’s hard to imagine a more peaceful place to stay. Paul and Patricia did everything they could to make us feel welcome, and Paul even offered to walk with us on the retreat’s different trails.
