The house was tidy throughout, and our room was clean, but the price didn’t feel fair for what we got. I’ve stayed at better guest houses for the same amount or even less. This felt closer to a step up from a backpackers than a proper guesthouse. At night we couldn’t find anyone on site, not even a security guard, which made us uncomfortable. A lower price would have made this kind of accommodation more reasonable and earned it a better rating. It wasn’t a favourite, and I’ll stay somewhere else next time I’m in Melville.

The quiet garden was a lovely setting, and our hostess and the staff were both professional and friendly. The place has an authentic old world feel, with spacious, sunny rooms and sumptuous bedding and towels. Booking The Hillside House for a Johannesburg stay is an easy choice.
