Jan Harmsgat Country House

Lunch was generous, beautifully prepared, and surprisingly affordable. The estate wines went perfectly with the food, and the relaxed countryside feel made it a lovely place to spend the afternoon. Magda van Zyl, the manager, was especially warm and welcoming. She took us around the farm in the old Landy, with Lincoln the dog along for the ride. It felt authentic and memorable, the kind of experience money can't buy. Jan Harmsgat is surrounded by vineyards and mountain views, with a stunning setting that shows off the valley at its best. A wonderful afternoon with plenty of Swellendam charm. This place deserves more local support: honest food, great people, and a genuine farm experience without the tourist markup. Highly recommended if you're passing through Swellendam or want a proper taste of the Overberg.

The staff were very friendly and made an effort, which helped make our stay pleasant. The pool area was beautiful too. Still, there was quite a bit of noise from the nearby street. We spent two nights at the country house. The historic farm was beautiful, but seemed a little past its prime. We expected more comfort and modern touches from what we'd seen online. Our rooms were right under the roof, with little light, old carpet, no shower, and yellowish bath water.

The venue is great and the food tasted good, but little things took away from the experience. The vegetables with my steak were cold, and the waiters flatly refused when I asked for a cold glass with my fresh beer. A walkie talkie was left unattended on full volume at the desk. The local dog waited by our table, hoping for tit bits.

What a fantastic setting and location. We brought guests from abroad, and they were really impressed with the lovely food and service. Thanks to the friendly staff.
