We meant to stay for three nights, but ended up staying six. The team even offered us the choice of keeping our twin room or moving to a larger matrimonial room for the same price, and made sure it was ready as soon as we needed to change rooms. Dario and Sol, the receptionist who speaks excellent English, were both so friendly and accommodating throughout. The hotel is well placed near the bus terminal and the main strip of shops and restaurants. Our room was clean and warm, with a stunning view of Monte Fitz Roy. We also liked the key policy, which meant we didn’t have to worry about losing our keys on hikes. Breakfast had plenty of food and a good mix of options, and they let us come earlier or later to work around our hiking plans. This cosy family-run place made us feel welcome right away. They helped arrange transport for a hike and prepared delicious sandwiches and lunchboxes for the trails. Dinner is served on some nights, and it was a highlight for us. Don’t miss it if you can. The owner, Dario, slow-cooked an incredible pollo al disco that was more generous, tastier, and cheaper than many of the restaurants in town. Hotel Lago del Desierto was a wonderful stay, with a warm atmosphere and home-cooked dinners at very reasonable prices for El Chalten.

Getting around was easy, with lots of hikes close to the hotel. We loved staying here: the rooms were clean and cosy, with mountain views, and breakfast had plenty of choices. We also had dinner at the hotel, which was fantastic. Everyone was friendly and helpful, especially Facu. Check-in and check-out were smooth, and we were sorry to leave.

The location is good and breakfast was pretty good, but the place felt odd. You have to leave your keys at the office when you go out, and there’s a 12:30 curfew. Staff kept asking which room I was in, as if I wasn’t staying there, and I felt like my presence was putting them out. The room also smelled bad.

The reception staff were friendly and helpful, and spoke English. Breakfast was simple, with a few choices, but good. The hotel is close to the bus station, which made getting to and from the airport easy. You pay at checkout since online booking doesn’t allow you to pay in advance. The room looked clean, but we did get a few bug bites. It was stuffy and smelly, so we had to leave the window open whenever we came back to get fresh air. That wasn’t ideal in the cold. The shower was kept clean and worked fine, though it was very cramped and might not suit a larger person. The hotel was alright overall, but the rooms need better ventilation.
